Great warm sound and an excellent price.

Pros:

low noise at high gain
Decent stock tube
Knobs and buttons easy and effective
LED's on important buttons on back make it easy to see
Works well with steinberg products
Line in sounds very crisp and live
The tubes gain strengthens anything just as well as most 200-400 dollar tube compressors on the market

Cons:

Only applies phantoms power to both channels or none. (You cannot run a ribbon mic and a large diaphragm condenser at the same time)
Self monitoring control is sub par.

You will not regret this purchase for a second. The possibilities this interface provides well exceeds the price. A must buy

This is my first USB interface so I don't have much to compare this unit to. I selected this one up because of the tube preamp in the hopes that it would warm up my guitar tone a bit with the amp modeler software that I use on the PC. It seems to do a good job with that. The first thing I did when this unit arrived was pull it apart and replace the included Chinese 12AX7 tube with a Tungsol 12AX7 tube (an inexpensive tube sold right here on Amazon). There's a youtube video on how to do this with a similar ART tube unit. This unit has two circuit boards packed inside but you can still get at the vacuum tube and replace it with a little bit of gentle tugging and wiggling. One of the reviewers here mentioned there was some hiss with his unit using the 1/4-inch jack and I suspect this was due to the cheap tube that came with it. I don't have any problems with hiss on my unit with the Tungsol tube and the sound is clean with very low noise. This thing very solidly built and jam packed with a lot of buttons, knobs and features, most of which I'll probably never use. One nit is that I find myself wishing that they had also indluded a MIDI input like some other USB interfaces have. By the way, the name of this product is a little misleading. One could assume it's a "dual tube" preamp from the title, when in fact it only has one tube in it. The "dual" in the title refers to the two channels. Windows 7 found the device and installed the unit into the sound contol panel quickly without any driver or install disk, but there's still a bit of tinkering required in the settings after it's been installed which is all documented in the product manual - so be sure to read it carefully.Read more ›

This is a decent piece of equipment for what it's worth. When I first plugged it in there was this terrible hum. It seems like after the tubes warmed up the feedback died down quite a lot. I'm glad it did because it was terrible. I am using this to run my outputs from my DAC just to warm up my station. I find all digital systems fatiguing. Over the years it can really put a number on your ears. Don't get me wrong, digital is highly accurate but perhaps its a little too much so for my taste, at least in the long run. Running my outputs through this takes away a little bit of the edge and provides a nice warmness especially for the likes of hip hop or other music with a good general low end. The Art USB Dual Tube Pre really thickens up kick drums and bass sounds. What I really like is that you can listen at a low volume and feel the weight and presence of the low end. In that respect, this is a winner.

If you plan to use this as a primary interface then you will more than likely be disappointed unless you are used to a lot of hiss especially using the 1/4 inch input. The XLR input does a little bit of a better job but the hiss is still noticeable. I have not tried using this as a preamp with any microphones. I find the Audacity software that it comes with as quite useless. There is no support for midi or VST instruments so midi controllers do not function with it. You could possibly work around this by using a different software. I find the compressor decent and the phase reverse useable. Overall, this product serves its intended purpose for my application.

I would like to provide an update on my review. As time goes along, I am experiencing a static noise on the volume knob. You only hear it when you go to adjust the monitor levels but it does get annoying.

I just did a project with an engineer that has worked in studios where each channel has a $10,000 pre-amp. So, when my old tour bus broke down in Ukiah, CA and I had one more guitar track to lay down and 2 days to meet the mastering deadline, all I had was this thing and a great laptop.

This item is so versatile, I was a little intimidated by the learning curve but in an hour or so, I had it dialed in. The guitar sound was so good we featured it, naked, all by itself, not doctored by effects for the song's intro. I'll be using this more often and may even end up with a stack of them in my next studio.

After rocking out some tracks for a few hours with this unit I was really happy with it. There was some noise, it didn't sound great, but it sounded good and made recording on my computer very fun and easy.

That was the only few hours the thing worked. Suddenly the power light switched off and only the USB powered headphone stuff was on. Yorkville sound (who makes ART) said it was probably just the power adapter. Luckily, LQI was good and sent me a replacement adapter pretty quickly. Guess what? I plugged it in and it immediately blew it up. The same thing happened to the power supply almost instantly. So I guess now I have to get the whole thing replaced.

Anyways, this is obviously a pretty bad first impression with ART. If the unit worked right I would've been extremely satisfied because it fit my needs for recording perfectly and put out good decent at a fair price. If only...
