Product Description

Carbon Monoxide (CO) is a toxic, odorless, and tasteless gas produced by the incomplete combustion of gasoline, kerosene, natural gas, butane, propane, fuel oil, wood, coal, and other fossil fuels. Dangerous levels of CO can be produced by internal combustion engines or from any poorly vented or improperly adjusted fuel-burning appliance. Exposure to CO may cause sickness, headaches, or even death. This Carbon Monoxide Detector can save a pilot's life, especially when flying with the heater on, by warning of the presence of CO in the cockpit-the spot will turn gray/black when CO is in the air. The spot on the detector returns to normal color after it is exposed to fresh air. You can use this CO-DETECTOR as your personal and portable CO detection device. With the adhesive back, stick it on the panel or dash for a semi-permanent installation, or wear it on an ID badge or on a lanyard.

I own a 45 year old PA28-180 and I felt a plane this old requires a CO detector. My investigation of the CO issue indicated this product is only good for one month. CO intrusion into your aircraft is deadly. Spend the money. Buy a lab quality CO detector that will work in high altitudes and low temperatures. Also do not purchase for your aircraft a Kidd CO detector. A Kidd engineer sent me an email warning me that the Kidd units are only good for the home and are not suitable for aircraft.

I subsequently purchased a BW Technologies Gas Alert Clip which alerted me to a problem with the wingroot seals. On my advice, a friend who owns a Beechcraft Baron also purchased one. It helped him to discover a cracked cylinder. My BW Technologies unit is good for two years. There is also a more expensive BW Technologies unit that is good for three years.

Note: free standing CO detectors do not need to be FAA certified, so it will not cost you an arm, a leg or your first born.

I like this detector. It is made of thick durable plastic and came with instructions. I bought it for my car because I suspected I had a leak but couldn't find it so I wanted some extra peace of mind. It's small and can easily be attached to the dash. I prefer to let it set in the cubby tray since it is small and doesn't take up much room.

I had a massive exhaust leak in my car (broken manifold) and this did not even register any exhaust in my car.
