I currently own the HS-1A headset with the flexible boom MIC (as pictured). The product pictured here is the HS-1A not the HS-1. both have excellent reviews and are great products however until amazon makes it clear which one you'll be buying i would advise caution.

I have owned this headset for the last 14 months and wear it approximately six hours a week. If you wear it for much longer than an hour it feels like a vice grip on your skull. The screw that holds the microphone in place constantly comes loose so I'm often forced to hold the yoke in one hand and the microphone in place with my other hand. The adjustment screws to make the fit tighter or looser are not well engineered and frequently pop out. I am currently shopping around for a replacement because this headset no longer suits me.

Just used this headset the other day and it's awesome. I have no idea why people would pay so much money for a headset. I'm not sure how much clearer one could be. I've used a David Clark before (an older one) and this one is so much better. I'm definitely impressed.

I fly Cessna 150's, 172's, and 182's so it's fairly loud(to me) in the cockpit. For the past year I've only used my Lightspeed Sierra headset when I fly, but I didn't want to fork over $600+ for extra headsets. I didn't wanna spend a ton of money so I figured I'd give these a shot. I bought these for passengers to use now that I'm flying other people more often. I was REALLY impressed by them considering their price!

Now on to the review:

Noise Reduction: 4.5 stars
They don't hold a candle to my Lightspeed's, but at 1/6th the cost, they are really good. BUUUUT, if you break the seal on the ear muffs, like with sunglass arms, the noise instantly jumps up. I almost always fly during the day and with sunglasses so this is annoying as I had to angle my sunglasses to where the arms were above the muffs. Not a big deal if your plane has good sun visors and you don't need sunglasses, but I definitely thought it was worth mentioning.
I bought a $320 David Clark headset that was similar to this ASA headset (PNR, no frills) but returned it after only 2 flights. This ASA headset is way, way better, and 1/3rd the cost.

Sound Quality:
These things are impressive!! Really impressive. For $115 I'm shocked at the sound quality. They sound as good, if not better than my Lightspeeds(possibly due to the Lightspeed's ANR/negative noise). But every thing is crystal clear with this headset, even music played through the dash panel.

Microphone: 5 stars
Again, really impressive. The headset I received is in fact the "HS-1a" which is what is pictured (it has the flexible mic boom). I installed the foam mic cover (which is included). This mic is better than Lightspeed mic!

The ASA HS-1 Aviation Headset is a good set and for the money you pay you get more than most. It works great and is easy to use. If you fly every day all day you might want to put some more cash down on a bose or DC set. All in all I am happy. Your gear is only as good as you take care of it!

I have a Bose A20 headset with bluetooth and I absolutely love it. However, when shopping for a headset for my passengers, I wasn't exactly thrilled with the thought of buying another $1k headset.

This fits the bill perfectly. This headset is very durable, looks nice, and sounds excellent. Although I really enjoy the noise canceling capability of my Bose A20, I would have no problem using this headset instead.

The headset has the a mono/stereo switch on the junction box. If you're only getting sound in one side, try moving the switch; that should fix you up.

The headset that was shipped to me does have the flexible mic boom. That is a very nice feature. The boom is a bit larger than the one on my Bose A20; I'm not sure if that is a feature or a detriment at this point, though.

This headset doesn't include a case but, for this price, who could complain? I bought the ASA Single Headset Bag from Amazon for very little money and it works perfectly.

If you're looking for an extra headset or even just a beginner headset, you can't go wrong. But, once you start flying, check out the Bose A20 or another higher end headset....you'll thank yourself for the investment.

Has intermittent noise coming from mic. tried 2 other headsets and the only one that created the static was the HS-1. It started jest after I picked up IFR clearance and entered the 500' overcast. Made the flight extremely difficult not knowing when I was missing part of a call from ATC. If this noise was injected during a call from me, ATC would come back unreadable. After the 1 hour hard IFR flight I borrowed another set from a friend and finished the return trip.
I had sent my Bose set in for a repair and ordered this set for a short term replacement I picked it mostly for its price this was a mistake.
I had read other reviews complaining the same problem but thought it might be isolated to one or 2 head sets. They seem to be well built but if you can not communicate reliably with ATC they are worthless. I sent mine back for refund today and ordered a Dave Clark set to replace the HS-1.
