As an expectant father, I was looking for something to give me an idea of what to expect in the early childhood years. I have found other books on similar topics to provide much more useful information than this one.

I appreciated the author's approach of considering different types of development, since many children develop at different rates in different categories. However, I found little new information and did not think there was sufficient evidence or justification for some of the author's generalizations.

This book's most interesting feature is its coverage of spiritual development. The spiritual view presented is ecumenical and non-denominational, but implicitly christian. I would recommend this book only if this feature is what appeals to you about it.

As an author of a couple of Love and Logic® parenting books, a parenting educator/coach, and master's degree student on family studies, I am surprised at the negative reviews on this excellent little book. I say little because it is short, which is part of its beauty.

Dr. Fosarelli has done a great job of boiling down developmental theories from Piaget, Erikson, Kohlberg, and Fowler, in such a way that does not require a master's degree to understand. Yes, this is not a detailed how-to book for early childhood. Nor is it meant to be. But it does give one a big picture look at what to expect at the different ages and stages of child development including the important aspects of moral development and faith.

I appreciate the author including this information because it is an area of child development that is not generally focused on except in religious circles. Yet these areas, despite one's religion or lack thereof, are an important aspect of child development. In addition to being an MD and assistant professor of pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Dr. Fosarelli also has a Doctorate in Ministry and teaches spirituality and theology at various places. She is clearly well-qualified for the subject matter.

The book is broken down into child development stages: infancy, toddlerhood, preschool years, early elementary school years, preteen years, young adolescents, and older adolescents. Each stage of development is further broken down into: physical development- gross and fine motor skills, sleep, diet, and elimination; psychological/ emotional development; cognitive development; social development; moral development; spiritual development; and major phases that can be expected with the stage.

It almost seemed to be written in a hurry and did not offer much insight or helpful information. The only part of the book worthwhile is the part that talks about the spiritual development of children.

The review program forced me to give at least one star - does not merit even that. I am an educator, and I was hoping for a concise little handbook with developmental summaries. There is not one bit of valuable information in this book. Not even worth the $5.95 price tag.
