In 1949, Mr. Kihachiro Onitsuka began his athletic footwear company (Onitsuka Co., Ltd.) by manufacturing basketball shoes out of his living room in Kobe, Japan. He chose the name ASICS for his company in 1977, based on a famous Latin phrase "Anima Sana In Corpore Sano," which, when translated, expresses the ancient ideal of "A Sound Mind in a Sound Body." Taking the acronym of this phrase, ASICS was founded on the belief that the best way to create a healthy and happy lifestyle is to promote total health and fitness. After going through several brands and pairs of "walking" shoes, including New Balance and Reebok, I bought these and have found them to be the only ones that live up to the claims of being a walking-specific shoe for fitness walkers. Lightweight, cushioning in all the right places, good size toe box, and no discomfort for my relatively high arches. Asymmetrical lacing actually makes sense and works quite well, though a bit strange looking at first. I have a neutral footstrike, cardio walk 3 miles on pavement 4-5 days a week, and these are the shoes I will always come back to from now on. Oh, and they're not dorky looking! :o)

I read a review of these sneakers in a consumer magazine. I have tried at least 3 other brands but these are very different. They fit well and are very comfortable. The consumer magazine was right and I'm glad I bought these sneakers. They were not available in my area so I used my old standby: Amazon.com ! I'm going on vacation and will be doing a lot of walking so these will be put to good use.
