5.0 out of 5 stars Still the best intro to ASP for programmers
The authors' succinct yet clear style allows them to explain ASP, JSCRIPT, and VBSCRIPT in less than 300 pages. After two years in print, this text remains the best for bringing experienced programmers to a productive level in ASP. Not a word is wasted, yet the text is entertaining. It is complete, providing exactly what is needed regarding the web server, ASP itself,...

3.0 out of 5 stars Very inconclusive, assumes too much access to web server, August 9, 1998
This review is from: ASP: Active Server Pages (Paperback)
The authors assumed that all web designers have access to the web server machine, which in fact is usually not the case. I myself being the senior web designer at a fairly large company, do not have the access privileges to write to files outside the HTTP directory or CGI-BIN. The root of the web server is forbbiden to everyone except the System Administrators. Any request to change system files or upload data sources can take days to implement or even weeks. I also have my personal web site hosted by a seperate internet host provider. Which I have no access to load any of the DLL files from the book to test or use. I do have an ASP directory but almost all of the examples in the book call functions or objects from their DLL's. Therefore, I can only assume these functions work as stated in the book. I did find the general information useful as to how ASP page are implemented and the robust features ASP offers to developers.

After two years in print, this text remains the best for bringing experienced programmers to a productive level in ASP. Not a word is wasted, yet the text is entertaining. It is complete, providing exactly what is needed regarding the web server, ASP itself, and COM(ActiveX) interfaces to Visual Basic and C++. The text's style reminds me of the original Kernighan & Plaugher's classic "The C Programming Language". Let us hope that this text will inspire others to abandon the "fat book" syndrome of recent years and return to a clear writing style.

5.0 out of 5 stars 4 years old and still a good book, May 4, 2001
By
This review is from: ASP: Active Server Pages (Paperback)
This was the second asp book I ever bought and i keep coming back too it for help. it has a good example of how to build an advertisement banner managements system. I love that, and I recently looked into building my first com object, the book is an easy read, and sure its not all in depth like a wrox book but it is also not the cure for insomnia either.. if you can find one get it. Make sure the cd rom is in the back.. I use allot of the techniques i learned in the book on my site which is an asp recourse.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptionally clear, Start to finish, It's here!, February 6, 2000
This review is from: ASP: Active Server Pages (Paperback)
I've had this book for 2 years and it has solely guided me through many projects with ease. I was writing my first ASP project hours after opening the book. My background is Access, SQL and PERL. I found it complete, deep and clear in necessary details. I also appreciated the info on PERLScript. These guys write well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent supplement for your ASP books, November 9, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: ASP: Active Server Pages (Paperback)
I have read two of their [Fedorcheck and Rensin]books (ASP and SQL Server) and can say that their books make excellent supplements to your existing book arsenal. Their books focus on real-world examples and many of their code sniblets and examples reflect that.

I highly recommend this book for the working professionals who need answers quickly and for those experienced ASP programmers who want to extend their existing skills.

The ASP Active-X object tutorials and examples add a nice touch to the overall content of the book. However, the book is a bit dated (IIS 3.0 vs. IIS 4.0) and some of the code samples on the CD will not compile in Visual Studio 6.0.

Bottom line: Get this book if your serious about ASP and ASP Active-X programming. The email component and source code that comes with the book is reason enough to get it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Swell!, February 20, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: ASP: Active Server Pages (Paperback)
Well, this is certainly a refreshing book. The tone is conversational, but the content is technical. However, the book is easy to use as a way to learn ASP. One thing that is a bit of a bother is the reliance on the .DLLs that ship with the book. I didn't have the time to fool around with installing examples and stuff that I can't see myself using or needing. But, you can just skip over these without losing understanding, if you want.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book. Solid information on Active Server Components., June 13, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: ASP: Active Server Pages (Paperback)
The two-star slam on this book is unwarranted. The treatment of database access is not its forte, but rather its concise treatment of a variety of technical ASP topics. It contains difficult-to-find information on creating Active Server Components in C++, and is one of the few ASP books to illustrate (and recognize the value of) using ASP internal components from within custom components. The book is direct (e.g. very little fluff or tangential filler), but certainly not written at the level of a two-year-old or an insult to one's intelligence.

3.0 out of 5 stars good format but out dated info now that IIS 4.0 is out, September 1, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: ASP: Active Server Pages (Paperback)
The style of the book is excellent for someone new to ASP. The only problem is that with IIS 4.0 Microsoft insituted changes that make the info on network connections outdated. To be fair the authors suggested the use of IIS 3.0

2.0 out of 5 stars Publishers, read this, July 21, 1998

bobc@interstat.net (New Jersey, United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: ASP: Active Server Pages (Paperback)
This book handles databases worse than any book I have ever read. It's examples are shoddy at best, and it's reliance on it's own .dll's which aren't where it says it will be annoy the hell out of the reader. The book is written at approximately the two year old reading level, so if you want to have your intelligence insulted, this is the book for you. In fairness I have yet to see a book better than this on ASP (a truly sad prospect indeed).

5.0 out of 5 stars My Favorite ASP book, May 18, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: ASP: Active Server Pages (Paperback)
This book is concise -- it will get you going without boring you to tears! The authors have also looked outside the MS world; the information on PerlScript is especially appreciated. Professional ASP is also a good book, but if I was only going to get one, this would be it.
