So well written you will read it cover to cover,
This review is from: ASP Developer's Guide (CD-ROM included) (Paperback)
With a somewhat limited exposure to ASP I have purchased 3 other 'ASP' books and use them as reference. I have never read a 'computer tech' type book cover to cover until the "ASP Developer's Guide". This book is not only well written but is very thorough! It covers the basics of actually setting up a web with IIS and establishing your global.asa, connections, etc and throughly explains it all very well. The author gives excellent practical examples with line by line notation on why this is the best and most practical way to design the code. He is also extremely thorough in addressing pieces of the language that one may not use on a day to day basis but, may utilize as an excellent reference tool. I would recommend this book for anyone beginning or actively using ASP. While the subject is often confusing for a total beginner this is by far the best book I have read to get started the right way.

I lked his last book very much, but this one is even better!,
This review is from: ASP Developer's Guide (CD-ROM included) (Paperback)
The author's coverage of ASP application development is excellent. The content is well thought out and the numerous examples provide not only great code samples, but also led the me to a number of correct conclusions about how to combine the examples to write more complex code. As in his first book, I find Mr. Buczek's direct writing style facilitates a rapid understanding of the material and his anticipation of my questions is excellent. Probably as important to me as the ASP code is the coverage of other app-dev material that is peripheral to the ASP code itself - I appreciate that he presents the big picture as well as the full ASP code detail. Two thumbs up and thanks!

Excellent piece of work!,

This book is one great piece of work. For those of use with no experience in Windows NT there is a chapter dedicated to IIS and MTS. This is a definite must for IT professionals that want to break in Web Development.

Thorough but a poor reference and self-tutorial.,

I purchased this book with a strong HTML background but no other experience in web design. While the book goes in depth into the subject of ASP, it does so in an unsystematic fashion. This haphazard and at times cursory discussion of important ASP and VBScript features makes this book a poor reference manual. The lack of exercises to help reinforce what is learned makes this book a poor resource for autodidacts. Before reading this book, I recommend reading "HTML: A Definitive Guide" by O'Reilly and after this book I recommend the excellent "Designing Active Server Pages" by the same publisher.

This book is OUTSTANDING! Kudos!,

This book is a wonderful resource for people who have a moderate understanding of HTML, Visual Basic, and how VBScript works within an active server page. I went through the book cover-to-cover in about 2 days, then worked through the sample WebStore in about aa week. Buczek's line-by-line explanation of how everything works is excellent. To top it all off, The few times I had a minor problem or needed advice, I was able to email the author and he actually ANSWERED! It seems that the guy is genuinely interested in passing along knowledge, rather than just making a buck. Hats off to Mr. Buczek.

ASP Developer's Guide Review,
By Ted Wood (Albuquerque, NM) - See all my reviews

Although this is the beginning - in summary this book is fantastic. The information contained in this book is very readable, understandable, and usable for someone who is new to the world of ASP. I especially enjoyed Chapter 13 that teaches the ins and outs of SQL. In my developments, I have data in both access and SQL Server. This chapter made me much more proficient and confident with the use of sql statements. The sections on T-SQL for the SQL server are excellent. This book has helped make development a pleasure. Thanks Mr. Buczek!

Good, but not great,
By Ric Hofing (Montreal Canada) - See all my reviews

I am a SQL Server DBA and I have quite a bit of SQL and VB experience. This is a good book to learn ASP if you are an absolute beginner. The code snippets are explained line by line. While this may be good for a total beginner I found it annoying after a while. I would expect this more in a "Dummies" book. Also, there are WAY TOO MANY screen shots that take up a lot of real estate on the page. I think this is more filler than anything else to boost the page count. Greg Buczek (and most other tech authors) need to take lessons in brevity and clarity from author Ken Henderson, IMHO the best tech author on the planet! (see The Gurus Guide to Transact-SQL). If not for all the screen shots I would have given this book 4 stars. Despite this it was still a good resource to learn ASP once you wade through all the fluff and screen shots.

I purchased this book, along with the Instant ASP scripts book, and both have helped my programmers and myself become much better at developing interactive Websites. This is a wonderful development tool for the beginner as well as the moderately experienced programmer. In addition, if I had questions that weren't in the book, I emailed Greg directly and he answered promptly.A must have for anyone wanting to become a better programmer. |
