4.0 out of 5 stars Overall a good reference book but..., February 6, 2004
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: ASP.NET Tips & Techniques (Paperback)
This book has the potential for being an excellent reference manual. It is well organized, the writing style is concise and straight to the point, the layout is well structured and alot of topics are covered. However, some areas are covered better than others. I found the section on Internet Explorer web controls to be excellent. But I was disappointed in the database code section. Some topics such as the datareader object aren't even covered. Other tips such as using a dataset to retrieve a single value from a database and executing a stored procedure via an "exec procedure" string left me shaking my head. I wish the author addressed more practical issues like how to create a master/detail form.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book you'll keep grabbing off the shelf, March 7, 2003

This review is from: ASP.NET Tips & Techniques (Paperback)
This is a great book. If you want to know all the nitty gritty details of the .NET class definitions and such, look elsewhere. If you want to get down to business and start writing functional code, grab this book.

I have several ASP.NET books and this is the one I keep grabbing when I need to quickly learn or recall how to do a particular task. The book is organized into short "how to" instructions with sample code, each no more than a couple pages long, but in enough detail that the reader understands how to apply the sample code to varied situations.

This book will give you a good quick start, then if you'll be writing a lot of ASP.NET code I'd recommend getting Jesse Liberty's "Programming ASP.NET" from O'Reilly for all the details. One other thing to note... all of the sample code is VB.NET -- I'm more of a C# kind of guy but it's easy to translate.

5.0 out of 5 stars great book, easy to read, lots of goodies, June 19, 2002

This is perhaps the 5th book I bought trying to teach myself ASP.NET since I downloaded the framework, and I must say, I've learned more in a few hours here than I did with days in the other books. Another thing I've noticed is, this is the second book by Greg Buczek that has been as success for me, so I'm wondering if I'm going to be a fan of his :) It's that good.
