Book Description

September 27, 1999 Aspca
This clear, easy-to-use guide to dog training and behavior modification offers a refreshingly simple, one-stop resource for new owners, and a lifetime of ready-reference for veterans--all illustrated in the signature DK style.

This paperback edition of Dr. Bruce Fogle's useful guide to dog training will be a welcome presence in any dog owner's library for years to come. Endorsed by the ASPCA and written by a renowned veterinarian and animal behaviorist, this indispensable guidebook presents a state-of-the-art approach to training dogs of all ages by employing a system of positive-reinforcement techniques including food rewards and praise. From the opening chapter on "Your Dog's Mind," in which Dr. Fogle actually explains how dogs think, the reader will realize that he or she is in capable and uncommonly perceptive hands. This chapter lays the foundation for understanding such fundamentals as the differences between breeds and how to give effective commands. Training tips run the gamut from the basics of sitting and lying down to walking and heeling. It is a sign of Dr. Fogle's understanding of owners' concerns that he also makes room for a priceless essay on dogs and children. This book's deep well of information also features a chapter on "Overcoming Bad Habits" that will prove invaluable to new and veteran dog owners alike with its creative approaches to universal challenges including pulling on the leash, refusing to come, chasing vehicles and problems in cars. This troubleshooting guide is presented in a reassuring tone and offers realistic and humane solutions. In the signature DK style, this most trusted of dog-training guides is filled with color photographs that make the techniques easy to follow.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

First published in Great Britain, this photogenic twin of the author's ASPCA Complete Dog Care Manual illustrates the differences between American and British approaches to dog training. Whereas classic American trainers like the Monks of New Skete focus on the psychology of dog/human interactions, Fogle briskly marches the reader through no-nonsense training procedures as each spread of his book is devoted to a different practical concern (e.g., "Early Learning," "Basic Equipment," "Assessing Temperament," "Fear Biting"). His techniques, which emphasize positive reinforcement and patience, are solid and clearly explained, with none of the hand-holding found in most other "complete" manuals. Woe betide the typical novice who needs immediate help with a typically rambunctious puppy--the information here, organized in bytes and paired with photos in the typical Dorling Kindersley style, will be difficult to assimilate, and the techniques are not quite as easy to implement as the text suggests (witness the six-step program to control a dog's barking). However, dog owners with some grasp of training fundamentals will find this presentation convenient and (with 350 photographs) handsome.

From School Library Journal

YA-Everything an owner needs to know is here, from a general discussion of canine mentality and temperament to detailed instructions for beginning and advanced training. Fogle's message is that kind, patient, and consistent teaching results in a well-trained, safe, and happy dog. The text is clearly worded, and the instructions are easy to follow. The photographs are ample, appealing, and well chosen to illustrate techniques or advice. An excellent companion to Fogle's ASPCA Complete Dog Care Manual (Dorling Kindersley, 1993).

5.0 out of 5 stars Great guide for first time dog owners., October 18, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: ASPCA Dog Training (Paperback)
This book successfully guided my husband and I, first time dog owners, through all stages of adding a dog to our family. It offers advice on how to solve every problem we faced, and solved them conclusively. We found it indispensable. Although we had up to 7 dog training books that we had bought or taken out from the library, this was the one we always found the most helpful.
