Book Description

Images of America (Arcadia Publishing) September 18, 2001
The pictorial history of Assyrian immigration to Chicago encompasses more than 100 years. Their first pioneers came to the United States in the late 1800s. Eventually, by the turn of the century, they began to reside in Chicago. Following several waves of persecution in their homeland, these indigenous people of Mesopotamia continued to migrate to America, and now the largest concentration of them reside in Chicago. Through the medium of historic photographs, this book captures the evolution of the Assyrian community of Chicago from the late 1800s to the present day.

These pages bring to life the people, events, and industries that helped to shape and transform this vibrant ethnic community in Chicago. With more than 200 vintage images, Assyrians in Chicago includes photographs from the collection of the Assyrian Universal Alliance Foundation. This book depicts the many faces of the Assyrian American in various facets of American life interwoven with traditions from their homeland.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Important First Step, November 13, 2001
This review is from: ASSYRIANS IN CHICAGO (Images of America (Arcadia Publishing)) (Paperback)
This is an important study of the responses of Assyrian immigrants and their children to their newfound land of freedom and its lure for assimilation. The vibrant Assyrian community of Chicago has maintained its strong cultural identity, as the author asserts through a superb pictorial essay, by slowly shedding the social distinctions brought from homeland.

While the author ignores the tumulus years following the great exodus of 1980's due to the Iran-Iraq War & the Islamic Revolution in Iran, his study of the cultural activities between 1930's and 1960's would be interesting to most readers - particularly those with ties to Chicago.

Since the politics of the "Chicagoland" continue to affect Assyrian-American politics in general, Mr. Shoumanov's book is an important first step in the contextualization of the Assyrian experience in America.

5.0 out of 5 stars New Title of a Local History, December 12, 2001
This review is from: ASSYRIANS IN CHICAGO (Images of America (Arcadia Publishing)) (Paperback)
This book is a huge work of Assyrian History of Chicago. When I took Assyrians in Chicago at the Borders this was my textbook. I learned more with this book than in five years of attendance in many Assyrian conferences, lectures, conventions.
Naturally, the book is very well illustrated. However, it is also well written. This book is a telling text with respect to how Assyrian History has changed, been molded, and publicly demonstrated from its beginnings to the present day. It is well worth the sticker price if for no other reason than it contains some of the interesting information of a local history of the Assyrians ever produced.
I really recommend this book, not only to Assyrians or people with majors in this field, this is a book that almost everybody should have in order to understand the way humans have projected themselves through history.

This is a really nice book. First time I see something done professional about Assyrian History in USA. We can see that the author worked with a lot of sources and archives. Also it is very attractive model with a high quality material inside: pictures, scetches, design and so on. Thank you Mr. Vasili Shoumanov. Keep going please.
