Book Description

May 26, 1999
This is the tool you need to select the best delivery method for workplace learning and general implementation issues, such as development time and cost, equipment and facility requirements, and ongoing maintenance. This book provides a common frame of reference for media selection, helps keep everyone up-to-date as technology changes, considers business and financial factors as part of the selection process, promotes the use of multiple media within a single initiative (the integrated delivery approach), and combines many resources into a single, easy-to-use package that will lead you to the good media decisions. The free CD-ROM provides you with a presentation on training media selection, an assessment tool, customizable spreadsheets for cost comparison, and reference aids such as URL links to other media-related resources on the Web.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Finally, a book and accompanying CD-ROM on media selection that includes practical job aids and questionnaires. This is a must-read for any training manager who is faced with selecting the optimal media for a training program. -- Jeanne C. Meister, Author, Corporate Universities: Lessons in Building a World Class Work Force.

Marx and Hudson-Samuels provide valuable frameworks that increase order and reduce chaos. Their straightforward summary tables and graphs, in combination with their lucid and accurate explanations, will surely reduce the number of Valium prescriptions among those of us charged with shifting from traditional classroom to electronic training and performance support alternatives. I personally plan (with permission, of course!) to use their frameworks in working with my clients. -- Gloria Gery, Principal, Gery Associates, Consultants in Business Learning and Performance Support.

Today's training professional must also be able to plan sophisticated learning architectures that integrate several media options to serve an increasingly diverse and mobile learning audience. Ray Marx has put together an exceedingly valuable resource. While it is exceptionally thorough, it also provides elegant aids and guides that practitioners can refer to time and again to help them consider and understand the many choices that our exploding technology makes available. Of special value are the explanations and analyses that will help practitioners craft integrated learning interventions that incorporate more than one option and medium. -- Robert O. Brinkerhoff, Professor of Human Resources Development, Western Michigan University.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Unique Approach, June 16, 2000

This review is from: The ASTD Media Selection Tool for Workplace Learning (Paperback)
This book takes a unique approach to web-based training. Where other books focus on telling us how to develop web-based training or focus on the technology choices we have while designing and developing WBT, these authors provide us with practical tools that help us determine if we SHOULD be offering a specific course over the web. In addition, the surveys and questionnaires provided on the included CD can be modified or used as-is. They help us with the business decisions and the intructional decisions that go into this determination. I bought a copy and have recommended it to others. Great book!

This review is from: The ASTD Media Selection Tool for Workplace Learning (Paperback)
The real benefit of this book is its non-biased information comparing and contrasting various deliver methodologies. As a corporate training manager with a diverse multinational audience, I have found that this book is a valuable reference. My team and I refer to it often ... and it has become a valuable tool in our ROI discussions with senior management. I highly recommend it!
