Upgraded from the ASUS 1000HE. The 1018P is half the size. Love the size and weight. Getting about 7 to 8 hours of battery life (states 10). Immediately noticed and was disappointed it has a gloss screen. My older 1000HE was matte. Love the matte, hate the gloss. Everything is reflective with the 1018P gloss scree, especially ceiling lights at the office. The Synaptics branded touchpad is absolutely horrible! My mouse is all over the place, and has a mind of it's own. This alone kills the whole experience and fun of the 1018P. I end up getting frustrated with it, and go back to my 1000HE. Love the USB 3.0 & USB port charging (charge cell phone) without the PC being on. The new Atom N455 processor rocks, or is a lot better then the 1000HE's N280. Videos play a lot better, flash site load and run better, etc. Have had it for a few days, and still playing around. I just wanted to at least confirm I too (along with the others - google it) am having problems with the Synaptics touchpad. Not sure if Synaptics just made a bad touchpad or if they are bad drivers. You can make the sexiest product in the world, but worthless if it is frustrating to use. It would be interesting to see other 1018- user experiences.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Netbook January 17, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase
I did a ton of research on this netbook. Fast, easy typing, great screen, and well outfitted with 3.0 USB ports. This model is being sold at BestBuy with a slower processor and 2.0 USB ports for about $50 less than online. Don't be fooled. The extra $$ is worth it to get the product as designed by ASUS and not compromised by BestBuy. Battery life is consistently running 7 hours. Also, you need to load the ASUS utility from their website to patch the Windows 7 Starter edition so you can add wallpaper. Only came with a small amount of bloatWare. Be prepared to spend about 3 hours getting the pc configured, bloatWare removed and update the OS and other software. This is a close as you can get to a laptop in a Netbook profile. I highly recommend this unit. We also added the 2GB memory module for a modest $24.

1.0 out of 5 stars defective pc, wretched support February 9, 2011
From day one my netbook didn't work properly. It would not come out of sleep mode, and once locked nothing short of taking the battery out would get it out of being stuck. Holding the power button had no effect. So I disabled sleep mode. No big deal. Shortly after, the pc began randomly shutting down on me. Called tech support, they had me run through a few things, after which the pc stopped starting up at all. As in wouldn't even pass POST. I called to RMA, only to be told that they wouldn't replace, only repair. AND, the process would take from 4-6 weeks door to door (!!!). No option to expedite, even for extra money. SO, I will be left with a refurbished pc once I get it back in upwards of a month. DO NOT buy asus products!

4.0 out of 5 stars It's good, if you want to put Linux on it. March 28, 2011
I've used this netbook for about 6 months, mainly for email, web-browsing and document creation. It isn't super-fast, but the hardware has been fine for multitasking under the above sort of use. This is the first machine I've owned with a hyperthreading-enabled processor, and I suspect that accounts for some of its multitasking abilities. The aluminum on the body has held up well, and battery life is still decent. Pretty subjective, but I love the feel of the keyboard, and have no issues using the touchpad.

To me, the biggest flaw with this machine is its default OS, Windows 7 Starter. I've had good experiences using other versions of Win. 7 and was excited to try it on this, but the Starter version is intentionally crippled. I'd advise anyone looking at this product to take a close look at the Windows 7 features omitted in the Starter version. This didn't ruin the device for me, because I had intended to dual-boot Win. 7 and Xubuntu Linux from the start, and installing Linux on this machine is pretty straightforward.

So, consider this netbook if you want something that's small and stylish, has good overall performance for typical netbook computing tasks, and if you can deal with or work around Windows 7 Starter.

3.0 out of 5 stars Touchpad buttons simply unacceptable! October 19, 2010
By TG
After doing much research on netbooks, I bought the Asus EEE PC 1018P mostly to look up recipes while I cook in the kitchen, and to do general web surfing. I wasn't expecting too much from this netbook, but I am sorry to say that it failed in the most basic ways possible.

What's great about this product is that it's one of the best looking netbooks out there - very sleek, well designed, light, and just great to look at. It also has one of the best specs, and seemed like a no brainer to me. However, when it finally arrived, I discovered its biggest issue. The touchpad is simply unacceptable! The buttons on the touchpad (that look like a single bar instead of two separate buttons) are so stiff, I had to actually use two hands to operate them - right hand to position the cursor and the left to click the button! If your hands are stronger/larger than mine you may be able to use the touchpad with one hand, but using it continuously will most definitely give you a pain in your thumb. I had to return this netbook only because of this one problem.

If you are not into using touchpad buttons (that is, you either tap the touchpad to click, or you use an external mouse), this may be the netbook for you. It wasn't for me.
