It does not come with Microsoft Office, so don't expect it, only a free 30-day trial.

Con's: - Touchpad sensitivity.... way too sensitive and I've searched all the ASUS gesture configurations and there seems to be NO adjustment for sensitivity.

I found that it was easy to learn and get used to Windows 8.1, ( I was previously using Windows XP, I told you it had been years!)

This is an excellent entry-level laptop with decent performance, a nice bright screen, and a light footprint at about 5 pounds. It also has a smaller a/c adapter sort of like an iPad instead of the older style "bricks" which is nice - I'm surprised it's taking manufacturers so long to copy Apple's lead in the small a/c adapter area. The keyboard does feel exceedingly cheap (much cheaper than my $299 HP Chromebook) and the entire keyboard vibrates as you are typing. If you push down on the "G" key with normal force, you will see that entire part of the keyboard (T,F,H,V,B) sink in which is a little disconcerting. The keyboard is definitely the weak link in this system. ALSO, it pays you to shop around.... there is a major price war going on and I was able to buy this at a local office supply chain which matched the price at the big box electronics store down the street....both of which were significantly less than the current price here on Amazon. ONE MORE TIP: There are two models of this computer that are identical EXCEPT one has a DVD player and one does not. As of this writing the one without has been hovering around $200 and the one with the DVD player is around $220. It is very easy to get them confused as they have the same box and almost the same model number, so be sure to look for the full model number when you are searching: X551MAV-RCLN06. Both boxes will say "X551" in big letters but you have to read the small print next to the serial number to make sure you are getting the correct one. I ordered this one and was shipped the non-DVD drive unit by an Amazon seller and had to return it.

Wow, this keyboard is really cheap.. I'm typing this review on it and it keeps dropping letters as I type.

I never write long, drawn out reviews because they are boring to read and I'm not always convinced they give out more information than can be achieved with an abstract. However, this warrants a long winded review because I was so impressed with this bad boy!

I haven't had a properly functioning laptop in years so my review might be a little biased, but I LOVE this laptop! It is fast, runs silent, doesn't overheat, has all the ports I need, has the CD/DVD drive, the batteries last forever, (in comparison to what I am used to,) I love that there is a one-part power cord as I don't have to lug around the giant clunky things. It also charges very quickly, and that is nice when outlets aren't overly accessible.

I found that it was easy to learn and get used to Windows 8.1, ( I was previously using Windows XP, I told you it had been years!) I was dreading this as I kept hearing just how much a nightmare Windows 7 was. I do find myself reaching out and touching the screen out of habit of having only an Android phone and tablet to work off of and I imagine that I look rather silly as I continually tap a screen that was never designed to react and becoming increasingly frustrated until I remember that there is a track pad for that. Not really related, but I am so happy to have a proper word program and whatnot again.

One of my favorite features is the full keyboard. I really missed having the 10 key touch pad on the side and having the function keys more spread out. Also, the buttons have a satisfying resistance and "click" so you know that you've depressed the button properly. The settings are easily changed without extreme navigation away from whatever you are doing, an amazing innovation that I have been begging for since computers have existed.

This is a pretty decent entry level laptop. Given its price, one should expect much for the specs and build quality. Nonetheless, it is still a performer in its class. The deal breaker for some would be for it not being user upgradable as there are no detachable covers for the hard disk and the memory cards. Also the battery is also non user replaceable. The only way to upgrade it would be to take apart the laptop which may void your warranty. Also, the BIOS is locked by boot secure and Asus did not include the unlock option unlike other BIOSes from other manufacturers. You have to search for a BIOS utility to unlock boot secure. If you are comfortable with those limitations, this model is still a good buy.

It is a great start-up computer, or as a guest computer. I purchased it for school because my last one broke. I will most likely have to upgrade within 6 months. The computer does everything I want it to so for the price I'm not complaining. It does not come with Microsoft Office, so don't expect it, only a free 30-day trial. Also, the Microsoft 8.1 is not horrendous to work with. It does give you a "Desktop" option so you can easily switch back to the older (more familiar) layout.

In terms of manufacturing, the laptop is very flimsy. Please purchase the warranty (it was an extra $31.00 which is a really good price, it covers you for a year, including accidents). The trackpad/mousepad is very "touchy-feeling" and sometimes it only takes a light stroke to move the mouse, other times you have to mash on it. The keyboard, overall, sucks terribly. I plan to buy a case for the entire laptop.

In terms of overall, it is a very cheap, flimsy laptop but it has a heart of gold. You decide if form or function is more important. For me, I chose function.
