The a53u works well as a back up laptop, but not for the everyday use especially when it comes to video editing, video streaming, or online gaming. Many of these problems can be fixed with the right amount of money invested into it, but if you're looking for a laptop that you can just pickup and use this may not be fore you. Even with those cons there are a few pros. One being that this laptop has a large display and an HDMI out. It also has different energy and functioning options in order to optimize use of you laptop. all in all this laptop is very good for the price but if you're looking for a notebook for video editing or video streaming you might want to look elsewhere.

I have owned this computer for a year now and I love it. Sometimes Windows updates throws off the audio drivers, but the two times that I have had to address that issue I have been able to resolve it via ASUS customer service--which I would like to rave about for a bit. There really aren't many companies these days that offer timely support from a knowledgeable, live, breathing human being whose native tongue is English.

After my 10 year old Toshiba took a digger I was initially thinking that I'd get another, but then I read a lot of not-so-good recent reviews on their customer service and products...

...and I am SO happy that I went with an ASUS. :)

#######

(Edit) After a year and a half, the processor did start lagging a great deal when viewing videos either in a browser or on a media player. It's crashed while doing very light video editing with Windows Movie Maker and Power Director Express. Another gripe that I have is that the audio is screwy (it drags) when I have two types of media going at once (i.e. webcam and music player) and I have found that Windows updates don't have everything to do with it. Seeing the reviews here since made since I made the purchase, though, I feel rather lucky. Yikes. I can't keep the ASUS automatic update utility on because it's a resource monger, and I haven't the wherewithal or the patience to look up what drivers I need to update (which I have not done in a year) on the site. I know that I can get help from their fantastic customer service, but I'd still have to put a few hours into sorting the audio issues out again. It seems that they made the audio system and related software a bit too intricate for my taste. My ten year old Toshiba did perform better than this ASUS in terms of audio and video when I retired it for other reasons. Would I have rather purchased a Toshiba, in retrospect? No, they don't even have customer service.

After tons of research....... I went out and purchased two. The reviews were fantastic. Then I began to have trouble with one and a couple of weeks later the other. I don't do much downloads, like music and videos, but I do alot of documents, files, and a little browsing. I have the most up to date antivirus, but neither of these ASUS' are working properly. I called support and finally after almost an hour of being on hold some lady got on the phone and diagnosed the "problem "in less than 2 minutes. Then when she could not figure the problem she advised me to back up all info and reset the computer to the out of box state. I did, now the computer is almost inoperable, but I will say that even though the thing is defective it has not shut down completely. I called ASUS back after reseting the computer, updating, installing anti virus, etc...etc.... and the guy says send it in. I guess some how I got the two defective ones in the bunch. I bought a HP today to keep me and my business afloat while I send both of my ASUS in for repair. I plan on giving ASUS another shot down the road, I just won't be purchasing one of the lower end versions. I think ASUS is solid. But I think you also get what you pay for, and they view this model as disposable.

I realized when I purchased this computer that it may not be what I needed, but it was what I could afford. I am a power user. This machine is not powerful. It is rather slow right out of the box, and as you add programs, it gets worse. If you need a laptop to read email and do letters, reports and such, this is a fine machine for the money. If you like to work with digital photography or music files, or play even simple games -not so much. There is so much Asus programing on the hard drive, I don't even know what most of it is supposed to do. Only 3 gigs of memory to run 64bit win 7 seems like a financial shortcut. It would probably have been better to put in less programming and add that last gig of memory. You can forget about streaming media too. My kindle fire streams better than this machine.
For the price, it's probably an adaquate computer for office work or writing reports for school, so long as you don't have to do any research on line, as the process is really slow and frustrating.

Decent enough laptop but the keyboard is terrible. You really have to slam down on the keys or else the letter doesn't show on the screen. This laptop does have the advantage of coming with Windows 7, which is far better than its successor. One worrying thing is that after about a year of ownership, it has started crashing and going to the "blue screen of death" if it sits for longer than 15 minutes or so. This has happened to me with two other laptops and usually means something is wrong with the motherboard, and the screen stops working.

This laptop worked great for a while then started having all kinds of problems with the operating system. It would restart itself and then say there was no operating system. Or it would go to a black screen and do nothing. So my daughter would not mess with it then a couple days later turn it on and it works fine. We are at the point were it very rarely turns on and its in the shop to see if it can be fixed. I payed more for this laptop for my 15 yr old then my own and mine has lasted twice as long.

It does what it says it will do, just not terribly well. The keyboard on this thing kinda sucks. Sometimes the space bar decides to register two spaces or none at all.

The numbers hate me and a few letters are too stubborn to move right away.

It's a pretty brown color though!
