Perhaps there were too many wireless signals in my area so if I switched channels or only used the 5GHz band it would be better, but unfortunately I was wrong.

I updated to the latest firmware, the merlin firmware, and factory reset to no avail.

Verified Purchase
Pros:
+ great 5GHz wireless speed
+ same SOC as the ac68u (currently the best CPU ASUS uses is in this model, which in theory should be internally faster than the lesser CPU used in the slightly more expensive and higher end AC66u)
+ VPN and dual WAN features, all the more advanced features of the ac68u are also in this model
+ I can connect at 560mb in my living room, with the router 1 floor below in my basement
+ real world wifi speed test around 40MB/s while connected 5 ft away from router, transferring a 1GB file from 1gb LAN SSD based server to laptop SSD. Laptop connected via intel adapter 802.11AC @ ~ 800mbit on the 5GHz band
+ Newest firmware has feature to disconnect clients based on signal strength (useful for multi AP setups when you want the device to pick up a stronger signal with the same SSID)
+ intuitive web interface with tons of options, only slightly less than say DD-WRT but all essentials plus a few extras are present in the ASUS firmware.

Cons:
- 2.4GHz frequency, more specifically the 802.11N implementation is seriously FLAWED and not usable until ASUS fixes the issue.
- Clients drop connection on 2.4GHz 802.11N connection after about ~50MB of data is transferred. Router seems to go into low power mode, causing either drastic speed reduction (to say 1mb) or link loss/fade.
- I discovered that turning off the 2.4GHz N specification fixes the link fade / low power issue. Unfortunately you'll only be able to use b/g mode but it works well.
- latest firmware from 11/2013 does not fix the problem with 2.4GHz N disconnect flaw.

Final thoughts:
Overall this router has a lot of potential. The WAN connection is very stable and has not dropped in the two weeks I've used it.

All I can say is wow. I don't typically leave reviews for products, but this one needed to be reviewed. I recently switched from a Linksys e1200v1 after constant connection drops in an area with high 2.4GHz interference. I hooked this router up to a Sony Vaio Pro 13 with an Intel 7260 wireless chip via the 5GHz network and was immediately blown away at the speed and range. In the area of my apartment where I typically got a dropped connection, I now have a full connection, ping times have decreased to nearly the same as my hardwired desktop, and internet connection speeds have nearly tripled due to the increased range and power of this router. That's incredibly impressive for the 5GHz network to have a greater range than the 2.4GHz network considering all the walls this thing is penetrating to get to my living room. I didn't even have to change the default Tx power from 80mW to get that (configurable up to 200mW)! Amazing.

Bottom line: If you live in an area with lots of wifi interference, this router is your new best friend. If you live in a remote area and want a pain-free wireless router, this router is your new best friend. I have not experienced a singe connection drop, VPN services are spot-on, Asus AiCloud is one nifty little tool, and of course, it supports the latest 5th generation wireless AC standard. This is the best, fastest router I have ever tested (I'm a computer engineer) and I will not hesitate to recommend this to anyone. I can't seem to find a fault yet. I will update this review if anything comes up, but I have to say, it's looking pretty slim that I'm going to be disappointed in the future. It is worth every penny.

I just set this up to replace an E3000 as the main router. The reason for doing so is that the 5GHZ radio on the E3000 is flaky and doesn't reach my master bedroom. The router is placed at the front of the house in one bedroom with my master bedroom on the other end of a 2000 sq ft house. It's not a large distance as the house is rectangular so it's 50 feet at most, but there are walls in between. The 5GHZ radio was an epic fail on the E3000.

I'm happy to report that this unit solves the issue of the 5GHZ signal death. The signal is now stronger than the 2.4Ghz signal of the E3000. I routinely receive full to half bars on my Ipad on the 5GHZ spectrum in my bedroom where I had none before. This means that I will not have to put money on the AC68U which I suspect will cost at least $50 more for the external antennas. Unless you have a gigantic house, there's no need to get its big brother. As far as I know, the only difference between this and the AC68U are the external antennas and the extra stream radio that requires an equivalent adapter to use. In other words, not worth it as you will be hard pressed to reach the theoretical 866 Mbps of this router.

The unit has 256MB RAM with dual core ARM A9 processors (similar to the earlier Ipads). I have to say that the web interface is much faster than what I was used to. Youtube no longer freezes when it stream (but I still need to test further). However, streaming 1080P video from my HTPC to my Samsung TV the video froze twice. I use the E3000 as a client bridge with its 2.4ghz radio to the AC56U, which then transmit that signal by 5GHZ radio to the TV. I will have to test some more because it should not be freezing at wireless N signal.
