4.0 out of 5 stars Great product for serving up Videos, March 1, 2010

Decided recently that the mountains of DVD's would grow to a point that I could never conceivably store them in such a manner to make them easily retrievable. It started to dawn on me as to why would I ever by a DVD movie again. But, with the help of the eeBox, I can now have a method of serving up digital content to my HD TV. Through media sharing and open source software that I installed on the eeBox, I'm now serving up Movies/TV Episodes/Music/Picture content on my TV (much like an AppleTV). The HDMI output on the eeBox was the selling point for me. After recieving from Amazon, there were initially a couple hang ups with the product. If you don't have PC/Technical support knowledge, they could be quite frustrating. But, the problems are definitely fixable if you know what you're doing.

1. Upgrade the BIOS. Do this the first time you start it up and connect to the internet. The BIOS has been updated as of January 2010 that fixed a problem with the boot sequence. I bought my eeBox in December and about every other boot up, it wanted to restore from the backup Windows image that is on another partition. I could cancel out of it but frustrating at first. Upgrading the BIOS fixes this issue.

2. The eeBox wouldn't connect to my home wifi network. First off, screw in the antenna that comes with the device. It's buried in the packaging so you'll have to find it. Secondly, if you have problems connecting, the easy fix is to uninstall the wifi adapter and have Windows re detect and it will reinstall the drivers. Once I did this, it worked.

Overall, I gave this product really good review because it fit my specific requirement really well. It's sleek, doesn't take up a lot of room and is very quite. It sits nicely next to my other AV equipment and always generates conversation "what's that?". That's when I can show off my movie library. The keyboard does have some sticking key issues but I'm content as I will purchasing an PC Remote to handle the navigation controls of the media software.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great little DeskTop, March 25, 2010

I am very happy with the product, it works very well, easy to setup, keyboard and mouse are much better than what I had expected and nice looking. WiFi connected without a problem, other than I had locked the FN key to numeric and my password wasn't being typed in correctly, my bad.

My one recommendation would be to purchase 2GB of ram at the same time, or it should be pre-installed, because it needs it if you are using it as an entertainment center as I am. Then they pre-install too much junk for my liking, but that is the norm now days. It had more stuff running in the background than downtown New York.

I combined it with one of those really thin Asus Monitors so it's a nice looking yet small entertainment system that can be used as a backup PC if you dump hot coffee on your laptop, not that any of us have ever done that. Anyway, when I get my laptop back I can also use the new system for testing websites I design.

I swear by, not at, Asus! They make great stuff.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great media viewer, April 21, 2010
This review is from: ASUS Eee Box HD 1006 Nettop PC - White (Personal Computers)
I just received this 5 days ago, and haven't played around with it extensively, but I am quite pleased with it thus far. I connected this in my kitchen to my wall-mounted 19" white Samsung LCD TV via the HDMI cable. Since I could not mount the nettop to the TV I decided to mount it directly to the wall using wall anchors to screw the mounting bracket into the wall.

The initial set up was amazingly easy. I connected to my wireless network in less than a minute. I don't have cable and watch either OTA programming or online streaming. This little puppy allows me to watch my online shows while I am gettin' busy in the kitchen. I don't plan to use it for anything other than a media viewer from the Internet or my networked home media server, and probably won't run more than two apps concurrently on it (probably browsers or streaming viewers). So, for me it doesn't need to have a very large hard drive or an optical drive, or have the ability to multi-task.

I tried viewing Hulu programs, and experienced synching issues with the video and audio when I expanded the view to full-screen. I even updated to Flash 10.1 and upgraded the memory to 2gb. It's not a deal breaker, because Hulu is not my only source of online streams, but I was disappointed that the Flash update didn't fix the graphics card accelerator problem that's been mentioned on several blogs. I went to ESPN3, and was able to watch quite a few different events in full-screen without any issues. The video and audio were the same quality as on my full-scale PC that I have connected to my large plasma in the living room. I also watched a couple of channels on Veetle, and again the quality is the same as on the regular PC. I don't think I checked out YouTube, but will do that pretty soon. If I cannot view 1080p video that's okay, too. I can watch them in the living room.

I really liked that there was a wireless mouse and keyboard included. Since they are white, and I have the nettop in the kitchen I would like to find skins to put on them to try to keep them clean. So far, I've not found any, but kept the keyboard in the plastic it arrived in, and taped the opening shut, and put the mouse in a sandwich bag for now. I am sure that I will find a more aesthetically pleasing solution pretty soon. I know this sounds anal, but it will be too easy to get grease, sauce, water or crumbs on them, and possibly make them unusable.

I recommend this model of EEE Box, or even one of the newer versions EB1012 or EG1501, that are supposed to have better CPUs, and one has an optical drive. Just remember that they should not be considered PC or laptop replacements, so you will not be disappointed. If you want a quiet, small media center to put in your living, bedroom, kitchen or home office, then this nettop or one of its siblings should do the trick.
