Product Description

This powerful and innovative motherboard supports both dual- and quad-core AMD Athlon and Sempron SoC (system-on-a-chip) APUs integrating Radeon HD graphics and support for HD video playback. This revolutionary APU (Accelerated Processing Unit) combines high processing power, advanced Microsoft DirectX 11.1 graphics, and Fusion controller hubs (FCHs) in one small, efficient package. This SoC APU features up to single-channel DDR3 1600/1333 memory, SATA 6Gbit/s and USB 3.0 natively. AMD Athlon/Sempron APUs are the first multi-core x86 SoC with AM1 Series socket solution for entry-level desktops, improving performance by over 50 percent compared to the previous ('Brazos 2.0') generation of AMD APUs.

Board itself has decent features, and was stable until BIOS updates.
Initial board came with BIOS 406, and ASUS website has more recent version so I decided to update.

Flashed board, operation was successful, but upon reboot, no POST, though I heard one short beep and power was on.
Tried CMOS clear, removed memory, disconnect battery, etc. Nothing works. It simply shows blank screen.

RMAed board to ASUS.

It seems like all AM1 boards (including MSI and ASRock) are somewhat unstable at this moment.
Probably Celeron J1900 ITX is better option considering it provides decent performance with low price (and quad core)

Updates on 9-18-2014

ASUS RMA process was straight forward, and board is currently on the way to ASUS service center.

I own multiple workstations and laptops in my home, and trust me - this was the first board that failed to POST after successful flash.
It's not something like I made a mistake during a flash process. All board I have in my home I perform flashes under UPS setup to protect any power failure. Even ASUS BIOS updater informed me flash was successful.

Also take a note that, if you try update BIOS via ASUS EZ-Update application under windows, it will keep telling you there is no updates available. But if you visit Asus Website, you will actually see latest BIOS which has version 605.

I experienced stability issue with ASRock AM1 board as well, and so returned it to Amazon.
If you are trying to build a 24/7 mini-server like me (in my case, for development purpose - it was a low-powered build / web-server) I don't recommend AM1 board at this moment.

I ordered this item from Amazone the price was very reasonable (49.99$). It comes up with 4 USB 2.0 in the back and 2 USB 3.0. I tried to use it with Sempron 3850 which make this HTPC down to 111$ (with 2GB of RAM). I can call this platform as the laptop in desktop shape. If you want to build any HTPC this item is a good option.

I am using this for an HTPC along with an Athlon 5350 APU. It works very well for playing movies, amazon instant streaming, and other HTPC duties, which are admittedly pretty light.

Comments on the motherboard itself:

* The BIOS is slick and responsive. It's one of the best designed and easiest to use BIOSes I have ever seen. Not that that is a huge deal, but kudos on ASUS for that.

* I installed windows 7 on this machine and had intended to download all the ASUS drivers from their web site, but windows 7 does not have a driver for the onboard ethernet. So it was a hassle (my box doesn't have an optical drive). Also, the various drivers from ASUS's website were kind of a pain to install once I had downloaded them.

Both of these are pretty insignificant. Once you get this all set up, the motherboard just works without issue. I'm happy with it.

Very well made but inexpensive motherboard. There are two SATA ports which is perfect for my application. The PCE slot is only 4x, but I don't need this slot anyway for a small form factor build. It has a complete set of video outputs including VGA, DVI, and HDMI -- as well as analog audio out if not using HDMI. I am able to power this board, processor (AMD 5350), RAM 4GB x2, and HDD using a picoPSU-90. Even this PSU is far more powerful than needed for my build, but I was concerned about the adequacy of the ATX connectors. While the board has both 24-pin and 4-pin ATX connectors, it works well with the 20-pin and 4-pin connectors on my picoPSU. The BIOS is nicely done and allows for overclocking. I have used other ASUS mobos and continue to be very satisfied with their products.

Bought it used and its working like champ with an AMD Athlon 5150. Had an issue at first when turning on after sleep mode, I had to disconnect all the power and CMOS battery to be able to turn it on again BUT i got it fixed by updating the BIOS to the latest version (0602), it was very easy btw compared to older method, downloaded the file from the ASUS website, put it on a USB stick and installed it through the UEFI user interface.

I also like the UEFI BIOS (yes, my first time using UEFI), tons of settings to play with, if this is only with this small board can't wait when I get my Z97 later this year.

I have three of these now and I love them. I use one for my Ham Radio setup to control two radios (it has two hardware serial ports - but you need to buy a standard RS232 backplane (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002O21XVM) in order to use the second one. Another one is a home fileserver, and the third is an HTPC. I use the Athlon 5350 CPU in each since it's cheap. This board does the job superbly.

Small and compact. I got this for a new HTPC build. Coupled this with Athlon 5350 CPU. The rest of the parts were reused from my old HTPC. This one is much smaller and a ton more power efficient so I leave it on most of the time. My old HTPC had a Phenom x6 in it along with a Radeon 6870 card, both power hogs. Now that I don't play games on the HTPC anymore I didn't need to have that power consumption in there.

The motherboard is small and fits any mini itx case. Has one PCI-E slot occupied by TV tuner and only 2 sata ports used up by an ssd boot and 2tb storage drive for recording TV. This is a limitation you should keep in mind as I cant (and wouldn't) put a dvd in there now.
