This is a board that will last a while,

This review is from: ASUS P6X58D Premium - LGA 1366 - X58 - DDR3 - USB 3.0 SATA 6 Gb/s - ATX Motherboard (Personal Computers)
Like the last reviewer, I like building my own system. That way, I get what I believe is important and exactly the way I want it. I bought this P6X58D because it features USB 3.0 and SATA 6 GB/s. Do I really need that right now? No, but those will be the new standard and I want a board that doesn't go obsolete in six months.
My build consist of the following: Motherboard - P6X68D Premium Memory - Corsair Dominator 6 GB 3 x 2 GB PC3-12800 1600MHz DDR3 Process Cooler - Cooling Master V8 (from my last computer) Processor - Intel Core i7 960 3.2GHz Case - Cooler Master Cosmos ATX Full Tower Case Silver Power Supply - Corsair CMPSU-750TX 750-Watt TX Series 80 Plus Certified DVD/CD drive - Sony Nec Optiarc 24X Dual Layer DVD+/-RW SATA (3G) Drive Main Hard Drive - Intel 160 GB X25M Mainstream SATA II (3G) Solid State Drive (SSD) Graphic card - ATI Radeon 4870 1GB (from my last computer) Additional Data Hard Drives - 2 X Western Digital 1.5 TB Caviar Green SATA (3G) Intellipower. one Maxtor 300GB ATA drive (removed from my last computer). Graphics is reused as I will wait a bit longer to replace it. I picked this board because it is fast and I wanted to take full advantage of the solid state drive. I did not buy any SATA-6G hard drives but can do that in the future. I opted for slower data drives since my programs will run off the solid state drive. I also installed my old SATA drive from my last computer so I can pull the information off. The motherboard comes with six SATA-3G ports so I used four for the hard drives, one for the front port eSATA, and one for the DVD writer. However, there are two SATA-6G ports I have not used, so I can still add two more drives or SATA-6G attachments. This system is superfast with windows start-up amazingly quick. I cannot break down each component and say what contributes the most to the speed, but the motherboard seems to handle everything without conflict. Installation was no problem as all the components has easy to find locations and I did not have to set any pins. I have not optimized anything yet, just defaults at this point, so there is more to do, but I am glad you can trust a board to work well and that is what I got with this ASUS. So for the combination of features and reliability, I don't think you can do much better. The only disappointment for me in the board is that it only has eight 2.0 USB ports. Eight may sound like a lot but with cameras, iphone, usb memory sticks, external hard drives, printer, and a few other objects wanting USB ports, I quickly run out (yes I can use an external hub but rather not). The motherboard does have two 3.0 ports but my case has 4 USB slots in the front port and I also wanted to install a Sony 18-1 card reader. With the four permanently attached USB ports on the back panel, I could not plug in the four front and the card reader. So for now I am doing without the card reader until I resolve the problem. But that does not take away from how well this board is performing.

Easy to OC, SATA-6 and USB 3.0 great for future upgrades. PCIe layout could be better, my triefire radeon 5970 and 5850 are literally stacked on each other.

Not much more to say about the product except that, as always, ASUS has delivered a great product.
No issues, great performance, cutting edge technology. I always built my own PCs and always attempt to stay a little ahead of the curve. This MOB eliminates dated technologies like a floppy controller and IDE controllers while adding USB 3 and SATA 6 gb/s interfaces. Again, a great MOB that should last me awhile.

I am not a newbie to computers at all, but I am a newbie to building them myself. Having said that, this board it terrific, but there are a few things about it that I wish I had known before I purchased. Don't get me wrong, I would have still bought it, but may have planned some of the companion components differently. For example, this board allows you to install two HDD's that run at 6MB per sec in addition to several of the more common drives that run at 3MB per sec. Well, I know this is in the description, but I did not know enough to spend a little extra and get a drive capable of running at 6MB per sec. Oh well, this machine is so fast, I doubt I would notice a difference. Another tidbit is that the board advertises that it has two PCI slots and it does, but if you install one of the new video cards it can cover up one of the adjacent PCI slots making it unusable. (FYI, I installed the HIS H585F1GDG Radeon HD 5850 (Cypress Pro) 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready) Overall though, this is a great MOBO - well built and full of the newest features, just make sure you will use them to take advantage of them.

Build your own - go for it.

This review is from: ASUS P6X58D Premium - LGA 1366 - X58 - DDR3 - USB 3.0 SATA 6 Gb/s - ATX Motherboard (Personal Computers)
I've purchased this motherboard over a Foxconn Flamingblade GTI.
Pros: Detected all of my components without a problem. Ran very well with a 920 (D0), and is running now with a 930 very easily (idle temps lower 30's C). Detected XMP profile for my ram correctly with the correct voltages and latencies ( G.SKILL PI Series 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL7T-6GBPI ). Came with 703 bios. Motherboard temperatures are in the higher 30's (degs C) on idle and mid 40's under load. Very nice design. Stable. Goes to sleep and comes out without a problem with a Sapphire 4870 1GB graphics card. USB 3.0, Sata 3.0. Bundled software and utilities work correctly on windows 7 ultimate 64. Solid build, has all the possible features. Can fit a Prolimatech Megahalem. Cons: Price. Doesn't include SATA 6 raid for the two ports which is bizarre since the P6X58D-E (60$ cheaper) does. As i said earlier has many features over the P6X58D-E (especially the cooling), Express gate (which is generally useless), but i've decided to go ahead with this since it's sold directly through Amazon. PCI-E X16 slots are only two slots apart which may be a problem with high end cards (Crossfire, SLI) in regards to heat, and generally people who purchase X58 motherboards do so for the two X16 slots over the general 2 X8 configuration. Other Thoughts: Thank you Amazon for a very quick delivery, and great packaging. I've given this board 5 stars without taking into consideration price, or any of the other cons because it's a quality build and i was aware of the other alternatives. Won't regret this buy. Amazon deserves a 5 star too for its professional service.

Don't rely on Asus warranty,

This review is from: ASUS P6X58D Premium - LGA 1366 - X58 - DDR3 - USB 3.0 SATA 6 Gb/s - ATX Motherboard (Personal Computers)
I'm writing this review simply to express my disappointment with the way Asus has reneged on its 3 year motherboard warranty. I returned a motherboard to Asus service as after trying (and following the directions in the manual) to return the bios to factory defaults it no longer posted. The motherboard was just 1 1/2 years old and still under warranty so I easily got an RMA and sent it to Asus Service. A week later, however, I get an email saying that my motherboard was not covered under warranty because of Corner Damage and Corrosion. They did, however, graciously, offer to repair it for $90 (which, IMO, is a bit step a rapidly obsolescing motherboard that now can be picked up, new, for $85 on Ebay.
In short, caveat emptor.

This motherboard is fantastic! I made sure I did my research before purchasing a new mobo for my build and I was vacillating between this and the p6x58d-e, but when the price dropped on this one it made it a rather easy decision.
Let's start with the basics: the manual for this item is very easy to read and understand as well very thorough. The layout of the board is also quite superb and makes it quite easy to install and use with other parts. The included accessories are a bit superfluous, but that's not a problem as its way better to have more than less. Overclocking on this board is a breeze, especially when combined with Intel's i7 9xx; it makes it so simple that regardless of one's knowledge of computers there should be no problem figuring it out. Furthermore the O.C. profiles make it quite effortless to switch between settings that work verses ones that did not. The inclusion of SATA III and USB 3.0 make this board excellent for fast data retrieval. With the Crucial realssd 300, my PC boots up in less than 10 sec, with all applications ready to go; just remember to set your SATA ports to AHCI configuration. A big plus on this board is the dual heat pipes coming off the northbridge - one of the only differences between this and the p6x58d-e. Even with extreme overclocking my northbridge has yet to reach over 35c. If I was forced to make a complaint about this board it would be the Marvell controller for the SATA III. The E version has a 9128, a newer one that allows SATA III to be used in raid 0, whereas the premium only has a 9123 and does not allow this. However this is only a small caveat as the rest of this board is amazing. I would definitely recommend this board to anyone looking for a state of the art x58 motherboard that will last, even through the new sandy bridge boards. This board is great for beginners as well as experienced builders.

I wish I knew what to say,

This was bought as the motherboard for a first time PC build. I researched until I figured I had covered the entire web and went with this board. What sold me was that it is said to be 'future proof'. And that it was blue which is the color of my neon. Okay, not really. ASUS has good reviews, this board has good reviews and so trusting the numbers I went with it. The power has only been on for a few days and so far, all is well.
I cannot give a technical review. I wish I could but I am simply not that experienced. That was the point in the build. If I have the option, I will keep this review updated as I figure out what I am doing. For now, all I can say is that it works, I had no problems with installation, and the manual was really clear and easy to understand. I will say that due to my lack of knowledge, I did not know that this does not have an IDE port. Only SATA. I still would have bought it but I would have known to buy a IDE to SATA converter when I purchased this.

The motherboard is awesome, very good looking, impressive. When you open the box and see the ASUS logo everywhere and how the box is made and everything you feel like it was worth to pay what its worth. AWesome job ASUS.
I had a few inconvenients though, first, the mobo wouldnt boot up. I checked everything and tried again, nothing happened. Then it came to my mind switching the RAM to the blue slots. (this is the secondary slots, the primary are black color). Then the computer booted. I was like, ok, it works at least (i was scared at this point). I don't know if the black slots are damaged or one of them, but since im going to use only 6 Gigs and if i need 12 Gigs im probably just going to buy 3x 4Gb banks. The other problem was getting the ram to work at 2000Mhz. This was a pain. Crashes everywhere. Had to contact the brand and ask them. It was a minor problem. Look like the mobo is limited to 2000Mhz Ram and i was overclocking the QPI so it was getting unstable. I wanted to keep my overclocking because it was a major benefit and the bandwitdh gain from 2000mhz ram was not noticeable in benchmark nor in games, so i just put the ram at 1600Mhz with low latencies and it works flawlessly. About the overclock, if you're looking for an overclocking board, i would recommend this to you. Im a overclocking lover and all i have to say is WOW. Overclocking with this mobo is extremely easy. I hit 4Ghz overclock on my I7 930 in like 10 minutes, just set the QPI clock to 200, QPI voltage to 1.4v (probably can set lower) i just left it there because is safe according to intel and the mobo chipset runs very cool, around 37C. Very awesome job here too ASUS. Thanks! Then set multiplier to x20. CPU Voltage to 1.2325v and you're good to go. I had Cooler Master Hyper 212+ and temps are full under prime 95 never go over 84C. Other thoughts: i had a PCI Sound blaster X-fi extreme gamer, couldnt install it, because the PCI X16 are made in a way that if you put 2 double slot video cards, it will cover both PCI. wow this was very sad. But its minor, im just buying a PCI express sound card and problem fixed! Also the video cards are very close to each other, like there is not enough space for the #1 to get cold air, so its blowing hot air from the #2 card, in consequence, the #1 card runs at full load around 94C, and the #2 runs at 72C. This are for GTX460 SLI. I wish they were more separate and i think 2 PCI slots is too much for this days, i would remove 1 and maybe give a little more room between the video cards or something. Anyways, its not a down side, because pretty much all the mobo out there also have this little problem. This mobo is a must have. Good job to ASUS, again, would buy another mobo from you next time. =)

Intel 980 CPU
2 TB Seagate 6GB speed hard drive 1 TB Seagate 3GB speed hard drive (from my previous computer) 160 GB Intel SSD (used as boot drive-install the boot drive first, install operating system and then install other drives) Pioneer 206 BluRay (you need this toi install the OS) 4 GB memory DDR, I am waiting for 12 GB 8-8-8 crosair memory but everybody is waiting for this to be in stock) 4000 Nvidia Quadro LIAN-LI case Read the manual this mother board can take a vast combinations of DDR memory, I am using old memory at 1066 until I get my new memory which should run at 1600 or more, if I over clock it. I am not planning on overclocking, I want more of the stability that out of spec speed I am totally surprised and very pleased at the sametime that everything worked flawlessly, I highly recommed this motherboard, it has everything you need, including usb 3. I put together this system after nearly 16 years, I have been buying computers but this time I mustered enough courage to build one myself, the instructions from ASUS manual was pretty good. It took me between 6-9 hours because I had read all the manuals, if you do this sort of thing quite often then may be you can put together the system in 4-5 hours Now lets do 3D editing and 3D animation, should be great, I had to do lot of research to get to this point I recommend the mo, I am happy thanks ravi |
