I got this for my ASUS Zenbook Prime UX21A Ultrabook. It did exactly what I expected from it. The blushed swirl metal finish matches my ASUS ultrabook perfectly.

Installation in my case was just a matter of pluging in all my cables (HDMI Display, Network, USB printer, USB external HardDrive) and then the USB connector to the untrabook and then plug in power adapter. The VariDrive was immediately recognized and all the drivers got installed without any issues.

I checked all the ports after the installation, audio, USB 3.0, my printer works, my external Display both via HDMI and VGA work, external harddrive connected fine.

I was able to successfully burn a DVD and play a movie with no issues.

I did notice that the base of the drive where it swivels and the circuitry is located does tend to get hot so I recommend putting it in a spot where there is plenty of ventilation/air flow.

I bought this at the Microsoft Store when I got my Surface Pro. I have had none of the problems some of the reviewers went though. I plugged it in and it just worked. I use the HDMI port to connector my LCD monitor which also has outputs for speakers that get audio via the HDMI connection. I've used the CD/DVD drive with no issues. I see Microsoft just announced a docking station, but it's $199 and does not include a drive. I use a wireless mouse and keyboard when docked. Cat5 connection for internet works flawlessly.

In short, the Surface works as a great desktop replacement at home with this dock. When I leave for work I unplug the Surface Pro power and USB cables and scoot. Coming back is just as easy.

Reviews seem to point out issues when using other PCs, but for my application it worked great.

Asus has a great concept with the VariDrive but it's flawed. I bought it just for the drive and I thought a few extra ports couldn't hurt. Besides it looks cool and is well built. However, beware....I have a Sony Vaio Duo 11 with all the ports that the Asus VariDrive has. However duplicating the ports with the VariDrive proved to be problematic. The VariDrive would prefer you to disable ports like HDMI, Ethernet and VGA on your laptop and allow it to become the sole source of connection. The VariDrive works perfectly with a Surface Pro as it does not duplicate the ports of the VariDrive...USB ports being a non-issue. The Drive also locked and would not eject a blank CD. Strangely, the VariDrive has no manual eject mechanism....that's either a serious oversight in design or a blatant expression of design egotism by Asus. For the record the problems I experienced occurred with two VariDrives including eating a blank CD (i.e. I exchanged the first for a second just to be sure). I can not recommend this drive as a total solution for just any laptop. To solve my drive issue I purchased a Pioneer BDR-XD04 Slim Portable with Blu-Ray capability.

I was looking for a new USB 3 optical drive and decided to get this so I could use the docking station ports with my Windows 8 tablet (Lenovo ThinkPad 8). Now that it is working properly I absolutely love it but it took a bit of effort to get to this point.

The instruction sheet that comes with it doesn't say a word about software but there is a suite of software and drivers on the device that you must install if you want it to work properly. I tried using it with my ThinkPad 8 first. It didn't autorun and I could only get it to work as an optical drive. I stuffed around with all kinds of things trying to get it to work without success. Then I tried it with my laptop. The autorun kicked in and once all the software was installed it worked well so I went back to the tablet and ran the software install manually with no problems.

With that out of the way everything works brilliantly. I've not tried burning anything (I didn't realise people still did that) but I've installed software from it, ripped CDs to my SSD and watched DVD movies without a hitch. Using it with my tablet allows me to hook the tablet up to my monitor via HDMI, as well as my wireless keyboard/mouse and back-up drives via the USB connections, with a USB port left over for thumb-drives or whatever. The VariDrive transforms the ThinkPad 8 into a really useful little PC.

The VariDrive also looks really slick and takes up very little desk space. It's rubberised base keeps it where you place it. Better still, with a quick twist it flattens out to almost exactly the same size as my tablet so I bought an extra tablet sleeve for it and it fits perfectly. If it wasn't for the poor documentation that I reckon is possibly the source of most of the issues mentioned here, I would give this 5 stars.

Stylish package. Everything works except the video. Took 5 days to get a response from Asus tech support, finally after 4 calls got very capable help. Downloaded Firmware upgrades, utilities and twiddled bios on my ASUS laptop (which this product IS designed to work with) -- went from a black & white checkerboard pattern to a black and white vertical stripe pattern. USB items are slow to boot. A lot of $$ for this kind of performance. The video problem is well documented on the web. I got the USB 3 universal docking station for less $$, and it cranked right up.
