As a computer engineer I always had high expectations for ASUS. I finally upgraded my AMD Machine to a Socket 2011 Intel i7 core processor. I bought a Fatality board from ASRock and the pins were already bent when I bought it so I returned it and got this motherboard. I was going to go buy the rampage but saw this board had onboard wireless so I bought it. I setup the board with ease and placement of the CPU was excellent with ease. I also installed my custom CPU Cooler with ease. Overall a great building experience.

I installed my memory, SSD Drives, Blu-Ray Burner, and Video card. It booted up with no problems. I booted to bios and everything was recognized. So I installed windows 7 and installed the drivers. So far no issues. I did not need to flash the bios since the bios version was enough for my processor and memory clocks.

So far after 1 month no issues. The wireless card has been flawless since I bought it after 1 month. I have a feeling I got the 2nd version of this board where they fixed the wireless card issue. I can easily see my bios version is more updated than the older versions. So I cross my fingers and it continues to stay working.

For wireless card issues, it is not your bios. ASUS Technical Support does want you to update the bios by flash but don't use the ez flash button. I can see it is still very buggy so I still use the flash bios by CD/USB which still works for me today.

Overall it is still worth buying and I would say the best board for your buck. The Rampage board is good which I really wanted but my friend has the board and we both have same overclock speeds and overall I saved over 200 bucks since I bought this board at 269.99.

I am very pleased.

GOOD

- Visually appealing motherboard with luxurious-looking gold finishes.

- Six USB 3.0 ports on the I/O panel.

BAD

- The "ASUS SSD Caching II" feature requires that you connect your SSD on the two worst SATA ports on the board—the Marvell controllers. It's unanimously agreed that the Intel SATA controllers are faster and more reliable, so why the SSD Caching features aren't available on those is beyond me.

- I managed to install Windows 8.1 on an SSD using a USB key, but this motherboard wouldn't boot from that SSD afterward. It was suggested that this was due to the BIOS being outdated.

- The BIOS on this motherboard is outdated (0403). ASUS encourages builders to take advantage of the BIOS Flashback button (which is built into the rear I/O panel for exactly this). However, THIS WILL SCREW UP YOUR SYSTEM! I tried this, carefully following instructions, watched the BIOS Flashback button blink as it was supposed to, but the button remained lit after the minute-long process, meaning that the BIOS update failed. Now the system won't even POST. After extensive research, this is likely as a result of a flawed .CAP file that I downloaded from ASUS' official website, as others who have suffered this problem were able to successfully update the BIOS after a revision was released.

UGLY

- ASUS by far has the WORST customer support I've ever experienced. For the past week and as of right now, Asus.com (their main website) doesn't load due to a code error. Using Google to get to their support site, Support.Asus.com, most of their support options don't work. I signed up there last night and "registered" my product, and now I can't even log back in using the same login credentials.

Initial setup of this board went smooth (4930K and RipjawsX 1866 with Noctua NH-D14 cooler). Ran for 2 days. Then the wifi started dropping the 5G band (but would connect ok to the 2.6G band), that lasted a half day, then after a reboot, no wifi connections detected (have several computers, Ipads, connected etc). Googling the issue, RMA stands out a lot. Tried re-installing drivers etc, still no wifi. Then I took the plunge and updated to the latest bios (0701 I think, board shipped with 0605), got some nice flashing blue light action after pressing the usb flashback button, then the dreaded solid blue light. One would think that a BIOS flash feature would be flawless, and would not result in a board bios-less. Tried several diffierent USB drives, and several different bios releases, always got flashing blue light, USB activity, then the solid blue light (which means there is no bios to boot to).

Returned for a refund (also Google ASUS product support before buying).

Note that heat was not an issue, as I never got to the point where I tried to overclock. Was running Win 7 64 bit. ASUS software install wasn't clean (error message from their updater program every boot).

Also note that the wifi on the 5G band (when it worked) was maxed at 300Mbps, wheres another computer on the same network using Linksys AE3000 usb adapter was running 450Mbps. Give me quality over hype any time (wasted a lot of time with this board).

If anyone has any recommendations for an LGA 2011 motherboard (must support IVY Bridge E without flashing), I'm all ears.

Previous build (5 yrs ago) was EVGA X58 SLI. Still running well after 5 years (I7 920 OCed to 3.8Ghz).
