One thing I've learned over the years building gaming PCs is that ASUS parts never let me down. Putting your cash into ASUS is a safe bet that the product will last and you'll get your money's worth. But enough about my love of this brand, I'll tell you about the board.

First thing to check when considering this board is to make sure you have the right power supply -- the CPU power plug is 8-pin; some PSUs have two 4-pin plugs and that will work since you plug them in side by side to fill the 8 pin plug. The second thing to consider is the size of your CPU cooler -- I have a giant Cooler Master Hyper 212 the fan covers the 1st RAM slot. However, that is not a deal breaker since you can install the fan a little higher on the cooler to make clearance for the RAM if you must use that slot. In my case, I'm only using 2 sticks of RAM so I don't have anything installed in the first RAM slot. Speaking of RAM, this is the first board I've owned that requires the RAM sticks to be alternated in the slots to enable dual-channel mode. For example, if you number the slots 1-4 starting from the slot closest to the CPU, I had to put my two sticks in slots 2 and 4 to enable dual-channel mode... other boards I've used require the 2 sticks to be in slots 3 and 4 for dual-channel mode; just something to keep in mind -- the manual doesn't make that clear.

Overclocking: I imagine most of you are interested in overclocking with this board so you should know the UEFI bios on this board is great for that. Every imaginable setting is available to tweak to your needs, although, it took me a while of poking around to find them all. I'm running a 4670K CPU at 4.4GHz with relatively modest voltages (1.22v vcore, 0.9v ring/cache, 1.9v cpuin) so the chip runs pretty cool for being overclocked.

This board hasn't been out long, but there have been at least 6 BIOS updates thus far and many driver updates for the on-board features. Unless you really want the controls for over-clocking, etc., I suggest you look elsewhere. The USB 3 function wouldn't work until the latest update to the drivers and BIOS was installed. Support is very slow and shallow - the assumption is that the customer doesn't know what he's doing. Each contact with support brings a survey quizzing you on how the support person performed - never once do they ask the key question: DID WE FIX YOUR PROBLEM??? Back to Intel motherboards for me.

This board is solid and let me get to a stable 4.6-4.7 on my 4700k cpu by simply increasing core voltage and multiplier with everything else set to the optimized default (use the bios, not ai suite III). Turning off hyperthreading can also get you higher OC and keep temps down. The only issue I have with this board is it supports Crossfire, but not SLI, which means I will have to upgrade probably around the end of the year when I buy another GTX 780. Until then, this board will do just fine for me for a little over a $100.

1. had stability problems despite latest bios flash. it sometimes drops connection.

2. this is the second asus board i'v had with stability problems but have kept it because i didn't want to go to the trouble of teraing
