Better Than Other Mid-range Phones, +1 For Asus

The ZF2 is one of many Android devices that I have owned, though it's also one of the cheapest Android phones I have ever purchased. Its price is my favorite aspect, and I imagine other buyers were also attracted to it. This feels like very few compromises were needed to reach this price. And I know my review may seem early, but Amazon had mine shipped on Sunday, which is earlier than normal. This is the actual US variant from Amazon, not imported.

1) Performance: Z3560 + 2GB RAM + 16 ROM (~11GB free after upgrading the pre-installed ASUS apps)

I have never used an Intel SoC in any smartphone so I didn't know what to expect compared to Qualcomm, Exynos, or Tegra. Honestly, it performs very well from my experiences so far despite not having 3GB+ RAM like the S6 or G4, which means you can have multiple apps open unlike the Nexus 9 where it constantly reloads everything! Also the phone doesn't have the weird lag other mid-range phones display while installing apps, so you can multitask even when apps are downloading/installing from the Play store. I'll assume this means the NAND speeds are fine but I haven't tried any I/O benchmarks yet.

2) Network / Signal Reception / Tether: (T-Mobile US)

One problem I had with my LG G2 is that the signal performance indoors is really unreliable, and sometimes it just completely loses signal or drops down to 2G/Edge. Luckily, the ZF2 doesn't do this at all. Indoors I'm getting almost full LTE bars compared to the 1-2 bars, although the ZF2 is also receiving faster DL/UP speeds according to Speed Test (14.49Mb DL, 13.63 UP).Read more ›

Great Value For The Money!

I'm a T-Mobile customer and I purchased my iPhone 6+ from them on their monthly payment plan... I wanted to get rid of the payment plan so, I figured I would try this phone and see if it could be used to replace my iPhone for my needs (For the record, I'm not a huge Apple or Google fan these days but, Microsoft's platform has too many issues).

DAILY USAGE

My daily smartphone usage includes, surfing the web, reading emails, texting, using Waze, playing a few games, and taking a few pictures. For these tasks, I find the phone handles them quite well.

BATTERY LIFE

This area is a bit of a stumbling block in that the battery is 3000 mAh and yet you can run through it in 9 hours if you use it heavily as I do. For me, I keep a charger in my car and I use that when I'm using Waze so, I just have to make it through the work day and then the phone will be partially recharged on the way home so, it isn't a big deal as far as my daily usage is concerned. Also, I suspect it will get better the less I play with the phone as I've been checking out all the features for the first few days of owning it.

PERFORMANCE

With 2 Gigs of RAM and an Intel Quad Core CPU, this puppy is smooth! I literally haven't experienced a slow down at all and cannot believe how well Asus has done with optimizing the phone. Literally, jumping from screen to screen or app to app has been no issue at all as it remains quick and fluid throughout the day.

CAMERA

This is an area where many people have complaints but, I actually like the camera a lot and I find the quality of the images to be very solid.Read more ›

I've decided to edit this review after a month with the Zenfone 2. My opinion of the phone has changed with continued use. Below are my initial impressions. At the very bottom are my recent edits.

***PROS***
((DUAL SIM)) - Great for those who have two numbers, or travel internationally and pop in foreign SIMs along with their main SIM. It works flawlessly with two separate signal meters in the notification bar, one for each SIM. The interface for switching between SIMs for phone calls and accessing voice mail accounts is simple. You can easily switch between numbers for sending SMS texts on the stock messaging app, too. SIM switching won't work with third party dialers or texting apps though. Note that only the first SIM slot is capable of 4G data. The second slot can accommodate talk, text and 2G data ONLY.

((OVERALL PERFORMANCE)) - This phone is snappy and doesn't lag. When comparing it to the performance of my HTC M8 and OnePlus One, the ZenFone 2 performance is definitely every bit as good and quite likely better. It doesn't get hot, but will get slightly warm around the volume switch when under heavy load. I also bought a 2GB ZenFone 2 for my father, and the performance of that phone is very similar to the 4GB version in real world use. Obviously, the 4GB version also comes with 64GB internal storage and the rapid charger, but if those things aren't worth the $100 premium to you, and you don't do overly demanding things with your phone (gaming, video editing, etc), the 2GB version is probably the better option.

***OKAY THINGS***
((SCREEN)) - The full HD 5.5" screen is unremarkable. It has good color reproduction which maybe leans a bit towards yellowish in stock form, but the screen is dim compared to other phones.Read more ›
