4.0 out of 5 stars Among the best, not perfect, but quite good.
After 1 month of ownership...

Pros:
1) Dual handsets: can set up phones in most commonly used locations, instead of always having to track down the single phone that comes with most other cordless phone purchases.
2) Ringer volume controls: wide range of volume, instead of the typical 2 levels associated with most phones.
3) Comfort: light-weight and fits...

1.0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing Quality and Features
I bought this phone because it offered great value and features, but things haven't worked out at all.

Most important, one of my handsets stopped charging after eight months, so it had to be sent in for replacement. After nine months, the other handset would die after just minutes off the base. My experience with AT&T support was just a nightmare -- nothing but delay...

This review is from: AT&T 2255 2.4 GHz Dual Handset Cordless Phone with Answering System and Caller ID (Champagne) (Office Product)

3) Comfort: light-weight and fits well against the head and in the hand.
4) Style: champagne color is elegant.
5) Headset compatible: no loss in sound quality (also, just make sure you get a good headset)
6) The specs on amazon list no belt clip, but there is indeed a belt clip for each phone.
7) Sound quality and range: excellent. A lot of this might have to do with the particular layout of my residence, not sure, but I've used Panasonic 2.4 gig and Sony digital 900 mhz phones and had lots of problems with range, even getting "out of range" signals on a regular basis even if calling from right next to the base unit.
8) Antenna: extends less than 1/2" out of the phone and does not need to be extended / pulled out (actually, can't be). This is especially good for people who use a headset and clip the phone to their belt. Most other phones have a 1" - 2" antenna which can jab into one's side / stomach when sitting down and it becomes really annoying when that is the case.
9) Multiple mailboxes: the 3 mailboxes are ideal for those living with others or wanting one box for personal messages, another for business messages, etc.
10) Battery life: no issues so far at all even though talking on the phone for hours at a time.

Cons:
1) Outgoing message recording volume: it takes some practice to learn how to record the outgoing message without it being much too loud for those calling in.
2) At first, it is a bit tedious to program the phone and learn its nuances (volume, handset levels, remote call-in, etc., but that is common with phones nowadays and not unique to this AT&T phone). But take the 20 minutes to do it with the manual and you'll be glad you got this phone. It is worth the 20 minutes, no doubt.

4.0 out of 5 stars Thus far count me Satisfied, May 1, 2002
This review is from: AT&T 2255 2.4 GHz Dual Handset Cordless Phone with Answering System and Caller ID (Champagne) (Office Product)
After the earpiece in my Toshiba finally gave up on me and my Uniden's lack of range really was not cutting it anymore I opted to do away with all telephony in my home and start anew. Enter the AT&T model 2255. The other reviews confused me but I'm keeping my phone...it is (for lack of a better term)..the bomb! Here's more:

Pros:
1. The dual handsets are unbeatable. They feel great against the head and work well for the sholder/neck cradler like myself. If that's not your style they come headset adaptable and w/ a belt clip.

2. You only need one phone jack.

2. The combined answering machine system is great. The system is simple and intuitive to program and comes with 3 mailboxes.

3. The system is stylish in appearance & takes up minimal space.

4. The price I paid was great... .

5. Lot's of neat/useful features like Handset name where you can put a unique greeting on each handset; intercom; internal call transfer and announcing; call mute; distictive rings for internal and external calls; remote answering machine access; keypad lock; 2.4 Ghz ; great battery life; key-click; announce-only answering machine; toll-saver.

6. Caller ID function is great and deleting on one handset kills it on the other...big time-saver.

Cons:
1. Echo on answering machine message if not directly up on microphone and super-articulating.

2. Minor buzz on handset.

3. 10 rings to choose from...all are hideous.

4. Would be nice if handset volume was on the side of handset.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly surprised, August 22, 2002

I bought this phone without much confidence given the range of reviews. However, it turned out to be a great phone overall. Clarity has been exceptional both on the phone and the answering machine, with adequate volume on both outgoing and incoming messages. The range has been great as well. I've been able to walk around the neighborhood for several hundred feet from the house without any loss of signal.

My main beef with the phone is that there is no battery backup for the settings on the base unit. You have to go through a cumbersome process to reset all your preferences.

I bought this phone because it offered great value and features, but things haven't worked out at all.

Most important, one of my handsets stopped charging after eight months, so it had to be sent in for replacement. After nine months, the other handset would die after just minutes off the base. My experience with AT&T support was just a nightmare -- nothing but delay and contradictions. I expected much better.

Even if the phone worked, it has a few quirks that drive me crazy. The outgoing message sounds too digital and is hard to understand. It is difficult to tell when you have old messages on the machine, so if my wife checks the machine first, then I don't even know there is a message waiting (my old AT&T machine let you know how many old messages were waiting). And the redial button must be pushed BEFORE you turn the phone on -- a method so backwards that AT&T had to include a special instruction sheet letting customers know since they must have received so many complaints. And finally, the shape of the phone is just not comfortable at all -- they sacraficed a sleek design for comfort.

Unfortunately, this is my third bad quality experience with AT&T -- and my last. It's a shame to see a great phone company go down the tubes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great phone, March 17, 2002
This review is from: AT&T 2255 2.4 GHz Dual Handset Cordless Phone with Answering System and Caller ID (Champagne) (Office Product)
This is a great phone. It is extremely customizeable and easy to use. You get two handsets and two chargers (one standalone and one on the base with the answering machine). Sound quality is fnatastic. I was able to go a few hundred feet before it went out of range. I have used cordelss phones i the past that got static and interference just by turning my head, not the case with this.

Some nice features include: storing a name and number in memory and once you enter it on one phone, the other phone automatically receives that as well, adjustable ring volume (including ringer off), change the style of ring for the base and each individual phone, intercom system between two phones, and an easy to use answering service.

Highly recomended.

2.0 out of 5 stars Some nice features for the price, but poor performance., June 23, 2002

I was attracted by this multi-handset phone's low price and many features, however my wife immediately noticed an echo when using the handsets. We could have lived with that, however we also noticed that reception was poor when using the handsets away from the base. I tried using the spare handset in my home office (less than 100 ft. from base) and everyone I spoke with said that my voice kept cutting out. Additionally, battery life is poor. I'll be returning this unit and buying a Vtech or Siemens.

3.0 out of 5 stars Handset won't pick up clear signal 40 feet away, June 16, 2002

This review is from: AT&T 2255 2.4 GHz Dual Handset Cordless Phone with Answering System and Caller ID (Champagne) (Office Product)
haven't tried the call waiting and the answering machine part works ok but if your not within 20 feet of the base with the handset you get (out of service) or if it does connect you get static
the booklet with it tells you to move away from appliances etc to get a clear signal
If I wanted to get up to go answer the phone I wouldn't want a cordless one geez

We tried it for a month and it is now on its way back to Amazon. Calls were not clear even within 10' of the base unit. Tried to change settings on the base unit and they were not recognized. Definitely not worth the price.

This review is from: AT&T 2255 2.4 GHz Dual Handset Cordless Phone with Answering System and Caller ID (Champagne) (Office Product)
This is the worst phone I've ever owned. The incoming
messages on the answering machine are barely intelligible
and both handsets constantly read out of service. Many
phone calls get missed trying to get one of these units
to actually answer the call. This system was a huge
disappointment. I really expected better quality from AT&T.
It will be the last AT&T phone I purchase.

This review is from: AT&T 2255 2.4 GHz Dual Handset Cordless Phone with Answering System and Caller ID (Champagne) (Office Product)
I was originally attracted to this phone for several reason - the main one being it is an AT&T phone and answering device. To my dissapointment, the phone had a perpetual echo. Whether it is was the main phone or the second handset, you would always here an echo. At times, I found the echo to be very harsh and I would hold the phone away from my ear. As far as the answering device, the out-going message was equally hard on the ear and sounded muffled. Unfortunately, I returned the phone.
