4.0 out of 5 stars So-So Acceleration, but wonderful image quality
Myriads of reviews on the web will tell you about this card's so-so 3D acceleration, and I must agree ... it's not that impressive when you tried last year's model (X800) and noticed that it can perform faster and smoother. I bought this card for my HTPC hoping to be able to play protected HD content. The item description states "compliance with HDMI and HDCP connections" but it failed HDCP complinace. Contact with ATI support resulted in them saying the card is NOT HDCP, sorry. The item description states, "H.264 decoding, encoding, and transcoding" which is also not true. You must buy...

4.0 out of 5 stars So-So Acceleration, but wonderful image quality, April 25, 2006

This review is from: ATI Radeon X1600 Pro 512 MB AGP (Personal Computers)
Myriads of reviews on the web will tell you about this card's so-so 3D acceleration, and I must agree ... it's not that impressive when you tried last year's model (X800) and noticed that it can perform faster and smoother. But everybody seems to ignore ATI's claims that this card renders much clearer pictures and text, vibrant colors and even smoother video than its predecessors ... all of these are quite true. I use my PC for work 90% of the time and play the occasional game or watch the occasional DVD. Still, because of image quality, I found this a good investment. I would have preferred one of these super-sharp Matrox cards if I NEVER payed any games, but hey ...

The bad: a) this gets very very hot, even with the large fan in my original ATI (I would not even think about getting some of the copy cards with even less cooling), so I wonder how long it will last me, b) whenever the chip's acceleration is working very hard, I hear screeching noises in my Audigy soundcard.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fast Card but you need to keep it cool, July 25, 2006

This review is from: ATI Radeon X1600 Pro 512 MB AGP (Personal Computers)
Just let me start off saying the card itself is very fast. I just replaced a 9800pro and its night and day faster. The only issue i had was the heat that it generated. The card became quirky in World of Warcraft when it got hot. This was addressed when i cleaned up my drive cables and such to allow better airflow and changed out one of my fans to a higher volume fan. Its summer and the room was hot so its probably not all the cards fault. =)

For people with computers that still have AGP Slots The X1600 Pro with 512 mb might be the fastest card You can buy considering many new cards are PCI-E Only. This card might not be the fastest, but for casual gaming its very fast. I replaced my aging 6800 with 128 mb with this card and it improved framerates about 5-10 fps better.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good upgade for AGP slots, January 9, 2007
This review is from: ATI Radeon X1600 Pro 512 MB AGP (Personal Computers)
Not the top of the line, but it's within the budget of my minute purse. With PCIexpress becoming favored over AGP, this is only 1 or 2 cards down from the best AGP card currently offered by ATI.

However, if your looking for Ultra performance, think nVidia 8800 (and a 500+$ dent in your bank account). Upgade your system with PCIexpress!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fine choice for gaming, September 24, 2008
This review is from: ATI Radeon X1600 Pro 512 MB AGP (Personal Computers)
Everytihng i needed to know about this product was in both the Item Name and the Descriptopn. I had NViDIA GeFORCE card in pc and most fullscreen game modes weren't supported by the monitor yet same game in same mode works flawlessly with this card. would include video review if webcam were working properly since it's my only motion camera at the current time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fast and affordable, August 28, 2008
This review is from: ATI Radeon X1600 Pro 512 MB AGP (Personal Computers)
The price on this product was well below what I was expecting. The order went smooth and the product was at my door within days. It's really helped with the graphics on my 5 month old PC. I couldn't be happier.

5.0 out of 5 stars Call me happy, August 7, 2008

Purchased graphics card, though not on Bioware's approval list for use with Mass Effect, WRONG.....best card I have ever had. Mass Effect runs flawlessly! With all the complaints with Mass Effects shader problems why was this card on the no list? Just call me happy. Playing Mass Effects on a 21" Sony E540...WOW, just call me happy!

You must buy a $100 third party software package to enable this.

Another quirk is that the card will not output to HDMI until Windows is started. Therefore you must install it using the VGA port first to get the drivers installed. You BIOS, POST, and DOS screens can only be dispalyed via VGA not DVI/HDMI. ATI says this is a known issue with no anticipated fix.

The Nvidia card I replaced was plug-and-play and out-of-the-box did not have these issues. However this card does 1920 x 1080 much better than the Nvidia. The picture is exactly full-screen and the text is sharp and crisp. Despite its failures, quirks, and flaws, it generates a great view.

If you are trying to build an HTPC be very careful in buying sound and video cards. Despite their claims, many will not do Dolby Digital and HD video. DRM bites the consumer again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just what I expected, July 18, 2008
This review is from: ATI Radeon X1600 Pro 512 MB AGP (Personal Computers)
Great value for someone without a PCI-E slot. Easy to install, smooth gaming experience. I haven't noticed the heat issues some of the other users have posted, but generally I don't play graphic-intensive games for longer than a few hours at a time. No complaints here about performance or price. A good buy.

3.0 out of 5 stars now i can play COD4, July 1, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: ATI Radeon X1600 Pro 512 MB AGP (Personal Computers)
ok so it's got better performance then the nvidia gforce fx5500 i had, of course it's all about twice the specs.
the sofware that came in the CD for the gcar partially worked, so i downloaded the updated catalyst and driver now everything is ok.
i'm a little decieved since my HP laptop came with a ATI GPU (radeon express 200M) and works VERY smoothly even though the framerates are low (20-40fps minimal video quality settings), and this x1600 pro is somewhat glitchy on the same games that i play on my laptop (70-100fps minimal video quality settings also), maby because my PC is homemade but i did not have those problems with the Nvidia card or is my PC getting old?? dunno, but for the price and the games i can play with this card, plus it's AGP, i am satisfied with it
oh and there are also some tools if u are interested to monitor ur GPU temperature and tweak the clock... not for newbies sorry, if u don't know how to use u'll probly burn ur gcard in 30 secs
