AVG's Secret Weapon

AVG Anti-Virus & Anti-Spyware also has a secret weapon other anti-virus products don't have. It has LinkScanner. LinkScanner takes over where your anti-virus doesn't go--into the depths of web pages you haven't even visited yet.

LinkScanner gives you a vital extra layer of protection you won't find in other anti-virus software. And you can use it in combination with firewalls and anti-spam products from other companies with no loss of protection or PC performance.

Most web threats these days are literally here today, gone tomorrow. So the only way to protect yourself is to use software that checks the page behind every link at the only time that matters--right before you click on it.

Whenever you're on the web, the moment you go to click on a link, LinkScanner analyzes the page behind that link to tell you whether there's something nasty hiding there.

For added peace of mind, you also get safety ratings for your Google, Yahoo! and Bing/MSN search results.

Why AVG?

We've designed our software so you can surf, chat, work, and social network while we take care of security. We're so quiet and efficient, you won't even know we're there. But you can rest assured that we are.

  • AVG's unique LinkScanner scans web pages before you visit them.
  • AVG's enhanced scanner keeps your system running smoothly--online or off.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great protection for up to 3 computers, February 9, 2011
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
My daughter managed to download a virus on her computer while having McAfee anti-virus protection installed. I had to take it to a computer repair shop to remove it. Of course that was expensive. The repair shop advised me to switch to even the free version of AVG anti-virus protection. They told me they find it more effective than other more popular programs. I installed the free version on all our computers. I haven't had any problems since. However, when I had the chance to upgrade to the 2011 protection that includes social networking, I was excited being that teens are on facebook so much. The free version of AVG DO NOT include:

* Protection against hacker attacks
* Protection against downloading and sharing files
* Protection against infected instant message exchanges
* Protection against spam
* Protection for business computers, networks and servers
* Free support from AVG's expert technicians

This version does have all this added protection. I had no trouble installing it on my Windows 7 computer. It did not automatically load on my Vista computers so I had to download it from AVG's website. Not a big deal. The first scan run on my teen's computer indicated 2 suspicious files (not found on the free version apparently) and removed them. I feel much safer with this new version and the added protection and support. I highly recommend AVG from my past experience and will continue to use it on all our home computers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Affordable antivirus program without bloat, November 29, 2010
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
If you're a Windows user, running an antivirus (A/V)program is a simple fact of life. And if you've been a long-term Windows user, you've probably experienced the gradual increase in the size of the footprint the A/V system leaves on your system.

Our family has been using the free version of AVG since 2009. My daughter's college requires Windows machines hooked to its network to run an A/V program and inexplicably doesn't recognize the Norton Internet Security suite our cable provider offers its customers at no charge. I was led to the free version of AVG as a result of this (and the free version has kept her machine running virus-free).

I installed AVG on two portable computers: a 4-year old laptop and a 1-year old netbook. In both cases, the installation CD extracted the executable and saved it on the hard drive prior to installation. Complete installation for each machine took about 15 minutes (not including the time for the initial scan, which will vary based on the amount of data and size of your hard drive).

The installation routine offers options for a "no questions" and a custom install. I explored the custom options, but most users should be able to accept the defaults if they feel they won't understand the custom options.

After installation, AVG will go online for updates to the program and its virus definitions. How long this will take depends on the speed of your Internet connection.

Since I'm not a confident enough user to deliberately infect a machine to fully test an A/V program, I can't address AVG's detection capability (it can't be any worse that the Norton product, which definitely let one of our machines become infected with the notorious "Antivirus 2010" malware last year). Once installed, it does not take up noticeable system resources (and both McAfee and Norton products tend to soak up background processing cycles because of their rather large array of "services", such as PC performance monitoring and backup tasks).

If your service provider isn't offering a no-cost A/V solution, and if you want a slightly elevated level of protection over the free version, AVG is a good choice.

Two minor gripes:
(1) During install, AVG offers you a browser toolbar install option (bundled with Yahoo! search services) which you can avoid by opting out of. I find such an approach to be slightly disingenuous.
(2) The license code for this 40 --count 'em, 40-- characters long; I can't help but wonder if it really needs to be that many.

An affordable solution if you must run --and purchase-- an A/V product.

3.0 out of 5 stars Improvement over the Free version, but not without flaws, April 1, 2011
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I have been a Free version user of AVG software since about version 2, but I have started getting tired of the product. With version 9 (or even 8 but not sure), AVG started an ad-ware campaign for the Free users. They have always tried to up-sell, which makes sense since they are a business, but when it was embedded in the management screen and in pop-ups, it became more intrusive.

I figured that I would try the paid version to remove some of the annoyances. As others had mentioned, but I hadn't read yet, I received the "Installation Canceled Due to Higher Version Installed". I figured there would be a check for previous versions, but I expected a Paid version would always be a higher version than a Free version. I was wrong. I uninstalled the Free version and loaded the Paid version and the install went smoothly after that.

At this point, the Paid version didn't seem much different than the Free one. Same essential interface, same scanning engine, same Web tie-ins. I did like that it stopped prompting me to upgrade to a Paid version. Then, a week or two later, I had a warning popup that said I hadn't done a performance check.

I followed through and ended up checking out the performance piece. It turns out AVG has another paid product for system performance, with the first scan for free. I was not happy with the new ad-ware. Luckily, you can turn off the prompts for the performance piece, but when you go into the management interface, it still shows that I have problems, but not really.

Another thing I have noticed over time (the last several versions) is that AVG would check for updates and it would swamp my processor for about 10 minutes after logging in to my system. Until it was done, it would make one of my systems completely unusable while the other two would just be slow in response time. I am a gamer and I also experienced slowdowns while playing, even after the update was done. I know there is a setting that makes AVG nicer when games are played full-screen, but I don't play full-screen and there was no option to tie it to running processes instead.

Long story short(er), I got fed up with it. It had started turning into the products I avoided by going to AVG - McAffe, Norton, etc. I didn't like them because they became so large, costly and intrusive. Now, AVG seems to be going the same direction. I have started unloading AVG on my systems and pursuing some of the other Free options out there. It is sad because I had been such a promoter of AVG for so long.

Overall, I think AVG is still a viable Anti-Virus and Web Protection company. Their AV engine has saved me many hours of grief and it has protected family and friends from going to bad sites. Even though I have moved on, I don't think it should deter others from using this product. Just be forewarned.
