Brings You to the Production Floor Literally,
By
This review is from: AVP: Alien vs. Predator: The Creature Effects of ADI (Paperback)
This book is the tour guide to the production floor of Amalgamated Dynamics Inc (ADI), a studio specialize at creating creatures and effects. Prior to reading this book, I thought all the creatures in Alien vs. Predator (AVP) were computer generated, but somehow they look too real to be products of 3D models. After reading the book, I have more respect for the people in the field of creating these creatures. They are good, very good. You'll read about how the movie was conceived. There are numerous biography on the artists involved and the two founders of ADI. Every single page of the book is filled with photos and captions detailing the process of creating the characters and bringing them to life on the big screen. It starts on the drawing board where sketches were done, the creature was then modeled into clay, photographed and made into mold, painted for textures and goes onto the set. A lot of effort was put in the making of this book. You can tell just by the incredible number of photos taken and put onto the pages. If you're a fan of AVP, this should be in your collection. (More pictures are available on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)

Great book for creature effects,

This review is from: AVP: Alien vs. Predator: The Creature Effects of ADI (Hardcover)
I'm a huge fan of the Alien franchise and loved the original Predator film, so I was particularly interested to see how the creatures were created. You really gain an appreciation for how much work goes into a film like this. Nothing is left to the imagination. Highly recommended.

for the price, it's truly a masterpiece.... as i was working in 2010 and 2011 on a avp project with a full predator costume and alien set with eggs...facehugger..chestbuster...alien drone....and queen.... if i had found this book before it would been easier to do all this stuff but i founded it after... anyway it will greetly improve what i can do next ...many and many details on every picture... many details about hot it been done etc.. my only negative thing to say is that the cover glue was not strong enough and started to separate from the rest after only 2 days... some more glue on it fixed the problem without so much trouble from me... for the price it's truly a necessary book for someone who want to know more about how they created the film...

I've been a fan of the Alien and Predator creatures since the first time I saw them in the movies. They're products of very powerful imagination and great artistry. Regardless of the quality of the films, the creatures themselves are things of grotesque beauty. In the book, both kinds of creatures share the spotlight and are really displayed full-blown by the effects masterminds of Amalgamated Dynamics, Inc., namely Tom Woodruff, Jr. & Alec Gillis. We are treated to a tour to the conception and production of the creatures in AVP. It is such a mind-blowing trip as each page explores the creation and collaboration processes of the many artists and technicians involved in the making of the film's creature effects. How they resemble or differ from previous incarnations of the creatures. This kind of book is expected to feature lots of pictures, and boy, do they deliver. The photos are like a collection of crystal clear examination into the inner workings of the effect people. Each part of the alien's and predator's bodies are discussed and thoroughly explained. Overall, this is a great book for each fan of the Alien & Predator films and creatures.

Sometimes even the best fxs cannot save a bad movie, and this was the case with AVP. None the less the technical work , design and pre production were first class. You will have no doubt at all after checking out this book, in fact some of the best stuff didn't made into the film, like the predator smart bomb. If you like books about old fashion movie magic, buy it now.

They're no Stan Winston, but still cool,

Alright so this book isn't as cool as "The Winston Effect," but this book is obviously just on the first AVP film, rather than a crew's work over time. Stan Winston wasn't a part of it, which would have helped them out a lot, but the book goes through they're own unique processes. Great pics throughout, and some cool insight. On most pages, they have an artist profile, briefly describing what each member of ADI did within AVP. Really cool stuff. A must buy, even if you didn't think the movie was too hot. Shows the creatures were crafted well, even if Paul W.S. Anderson fumbled the ball.

Great behind the scenes book,
This review is from: AVP: Alien vs. Predator: The Creature Effects of ADI (Paperback)
If you're interested in either special effects, or the Alien vs. Predator films, this is a fantastic book that covers both. I had the mini version of this book that came with the DVD, which was really a sample of this. Everything from pre-production to the actual shooting is covered here with details on how the creatures were created with lots of beautiful photos showing each step in the process. Great item for anyone interested in the creation process of these two science fiction icons.

This review is from: AVP: Alien vs. Predator: The Creature Effects of ADI (Paperback)
From the moment I saw the first Alien and Predator movies I was hooked on the franchise. AvP heightened my elation even further and then I got this book. The detail of each creature, the techniques of the artists and engineers, and the overall format are beautifully done! A totally inspiring glimpse into the world of making monsters.

I bought this book for my daughter along with another predator alien book. She loves these characters and she found these books on Amazon, well they are junk. They fall apart as soon as you open them. They separate from the binding, just fall apart. Your kids will be very disappointed.
