Book Description

March 11, 1997

When Roshi Philip Kapleau returned to the United States in 1966, after thirteen years of training in Japan with two of the country's greatest masters of Zen, he "did not come home empty-handed -- he brought us a living word of Zen," Kenneth Kraft has said. The first Westerner fully and naturally at home with Zen, Roshi Kapleau has made it his life's work to translate Zen Buddhism into an American idiom, to take Zen's essence and plant it in American soil. Four decades later, the seeds of Zen that Roshi Kapleau planted have blossomed. Zen flourishes and Roshi Kapleau continues to help people find enlightenment and fulfillment within, not outside, their daily lives. "True awakening," Roshi Kapleau has said, "is not a 'high' that keeps one in the clouds of an abstract oneness, but a realization that brings one solidly down to earth into the world of toil and struggle."

Kapleau has written a number of books in his lifetime, The Three Pillars of Zen the most well known among them, but the heart of his work, his teachings to his students, has never before been made available. Awakening to Zen extracts the vital threads of Roshi Kapleau's teachings and braids them into a strong yet supple cord that readers may follow toward a deeper understanding of the enlightened life. Roshi Kapleau's warm, sometimes humorous but always grounded lessons touch on every aspect of daily reality; they capture his power, too, to transform the lives of not just practicing Buddhists, but all people who seek to experience in a more authentic way the bond they share with the world around them. One way or another, Roshi Kapleau has spent the past forty-three years of his life helping make Zen practice and its fruits accessible to anyone of sincere intent. Awakening to Zen offers a crucial and never-before-published aspect of his life's work.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

You could call him the first patriarch of Zen in America, and American he is. The beauty of Awakening to Zen is Philip Kapleau's attention to the concerns of a Western seeker. Using examples as diverse as Vladimir Horowitz, the Rocky Mountains, and a common wristwatch, Kapleau answers questions about Zen in a compassionate, readily accessible way. His decades as head of an American Zen monastery, not to mention his broad-reading and sharp intellect, yield an abundance of valuable guidance for a Westerner who struggles with Zen's foreignness.

From Library Journal

This book would be a significant addition to any library for three reasons. First, it is a collection of teachings on Zen (previously published but in specialized works without broad exposure) by Kapleau, whose Three Pillars of Zen (LJ 6/1/66) became a classic. Second, the wide range of subjects covered makes it especially useful for understanding the perspective of Zen on several issues of great interest, including sex, drugs, dying, our relationship with animals, and common impediments to Zen practice. Third, Kapleau's presentation of Zen concepts and their implications is so interestingly and clearly done that the reader is able to understand some basic but complex Zen concepts. Major points are illustrated by stories, examples, or koans, which make for engaging reading. Highly recommended for any library wishing to enrich its collection on Zen Buddhism.?David Bourquin, California State Univ., San Bernadino

5.0 out of 5 stars The Essential Guide For The New Student of Zen, June 12, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: AWAKENING TO ZEN: The Teachings of Roshi Philip Kapleau (Hardcover)
I was prepared to not like "Awakening to Zen" when it was given to me by one of my students. I was happily suprised to find the best book I had ever read on Zen Buddhism. Kapleau-Roshi addressed the concerns of the Western Zen Sangha, while stil maintaining a traditional Zen outlook. On a scale of 1-5, this could only be rated a ten!! Extremely Highly Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Necessary Book from Western Master, May 5, 2011

A while back, I reviewed Three Pillars of Zen, and I praised the book for its accessibility. Kapleau's desire to "open up" Zen to Western-influenced minds, readers who are often dazzled and perplexed by the whole system, is something valuable and necessary. I found so much to mull over in my multiple readings of Three Pillars that I decided to check out some of his other books.

Awakening to Zen accomplishes exactly what Three Pillars does so well, but is even more accessible to the novice reader. Kapleau's writings here have been culled from speeches, presentations, and short articles, so the language and critical discussion is simplified. He also presents many issues related to the practice and study of Zen and how this relates to "real world" situations. I found these particularly stimulating, especially those chapters dealing with how living Zen relates to other animals, the environment, work, etc.

I would actually direct novices to this book first, or at the very least, to be read alongside Three Pillars. Kapleau's work has done wonders for the study and practice of Zen in the West. In sum, he is all about presenting complexity in simple, easy to digest language that reaches beyond barriers to all eyes and ears willing to pay attention.
