Product Description

The Badwater 1216 (AL-820) is built with a set rock maple neck, 2 EMG-designed Alnico humbuckers and a classic-style single cutaway design. The guitar’s rosewood fretboard helps deliver a warm, thick tone. The scale length is a traditional 24 3/4” for vintage punch. Each 1216 guitar body has been distressed individually by the AXL workshop, so no two are alike. The 1216 comes with carefully distressed pickguard, tone and volume knobs, and anodized tuning machines, bridge assembly and strap buttons for a unique look and vintage feel.

I've been an active musician for over ten years, with bass being my main instrument for the first 7-8, and (due to a pinky injury) guitar becoming my main for the last few. Another thing you might like to know is that this is my first LES PAUL-based guitar. In other words I've never had a short scale guitar before, so it's kind of a new experience for me in a way.

Before I give you the pros and cons as I see them, let me just tell you that for the money IT ABSOLUTELY ROCKS! You will not find a guitar this cheap and is this gorgeous, plays and sounds this well. So, just keep that in mind.

Appearance: This is the strong point of this company in general. The guitar looks amazing! Although the color you see on the stock photo is not exactly the same, in real life it's more solid dark brown than the woody color seen in the pics, but still very beautiful. Even though the body is supposed to be "distressed", it seems that out of all the Badwater series this one is the least distressed. At worst, it looks like a guitar that's been actively used for a couple of years. The front of the body looks almost brand new, while the back of it is lightly worn out as if the guitar was played in a standing position. There are a few scratches, but almost invisible. I guess they thought this one is too beautiful as it is, and they felt sorry to damage it :). Now, the binding looks very filthy and old, so it does not balance the body's "age" well, but it's no biggie. Hardware is aged nicely, and the inlay blocks are cool as well. Otherwise, a total Les Paul knock-off.

Set-up: Again, very impressive. For a guitar at this price level, I've never seen a guitar so well set up. The intonation is close to perfect, and there is virtually no fret-buzz.

I was really impressed with this guitar. I ordered it originally for purely aesthetic reasons, figuring that it would not sound or play as good as it does. I was very pleased with the guitar right out of the box. it came professionally "set-up" with a low action. It has an amazing sound. Friends of mine with "real" les-pauls are very impressed with the guitar overall.

The Cons: First of all, AXL needs to stop sticking that dang EMG pickups sticker on their instruments. It ruins the finish and a year later, the cheap glue from the sticker is still on it. The neck is a bit rough, particularly the edges of the frets feel sharp; not enough to slice yourself but enough to notice. Also, when I first would play, the high-E string would actually get caught on the lip of the 3rd fret which protruded just a hair until I filed it down.

The Pros: Great price, Beautiful instrument, and a great sound. I'm very happy with this purchase!

Let me start out by saying that this guitar sounds and plays better than any guitar I've ever heard in my life. Now here's the kicker, it only costs 230 bucks. The neatest looking guitar I've ever seen as well. It does have some flaws in the craftsmanship but nothing that is going to affect the sound and for the price there isn't a bad thing I can say about it. I read that one guy has a problem with the tuners but I love mine. I NEVER have to tune my guitar and I play 2-3 gigs a week. I will say that they do need to shave down the edges of their frets better but again for the price. I own a Gibson Les Paul and a PRS, a combined value of $3000 between the two and I play my 230 dollar guitar over them every show. AXL made this guitar to show Gibson what it takes to sell guitars again. Get rid of the mahogany and reduce the price. Overall, best guitar I've ever owned and when it breaks I'm gonna buy another one.

My first new electric in about 4 or 5 years maybe even longer, and I love this guitar. The neck and fretboard make it really nice to play, this is my first short scale guitar and its amazing what a difference that makes. The tone and sustain of the guitar are incredible and it just looks awesome with the matte mahogany finish and bronze hardware. Sweet guitar with and even sweeter price.
