Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1–From the first page, where humans appear to be hanging upside down and a spider takes center stage (the scene is seen from the spider's perspective, as she clings to the ceiling), it's obvious that this is no ordinary tale. Monks begins with a visual bang and an unusual premise: a spider wants to be this family's pet. However, each time the arachnid tries to entertain them, they toss her outside, screaming, "Aaaarrgghh! Spider!" Disappointed, she stalks off to live in the backyard. When the family members peek out the back door and see the trees festooned with glittering webs, they decide she'd make the perfect pet. Although the resolution is a bit simplistic, the story provides a nice showcase for the art. The acrylic cartoons ably capture the wide-eyed, fearful expressions of the parents, their two children, dog, and cat when confronted with their visitor. A variety of patterned fabrics provide visual interest throughout, but the pièce de résistance is the backyard bejeweled with webs that shine with actual glitter. The bright red cover with its dangling spider; black, hairy title letters; and sparkling silver webs will entice browsers. Readers attracted by the glitz of Marcus Pfister's "Rainbow Fish" books (North-South) are sure to give this one more than a glance.–Laurie Edwards, West Shore School District, Camp Hill, PA

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for children - a joy to read September 24, 2004
Format:Hardcover
Aaaarrgghh! Spider! is a humorous read about a spider that just wants to be a family pet. However, he has one small problem. Every time he tries to do something to show how good he would be as a family pet the family screams and he is put out of the house. Written from the spider's point of view it is creative imagination at its best. Aaaarrgghh! Spider! is a highly recommended read for young children and sure to be one of their favorite books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Adorable November 1, 2007
By Robin
Format:Paperback
This is a very cute story for any time and also for Halloween. I read it to my daughter's Kindergarten class at their Halloween party and they loved it! They enjoyed shouting out "Aaaargghh! Spider!" at every opportunity. It was perfect for that age group since it wasn't scary but still was appropriate for the holiday.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story - format is pleasantly repetitive September 11, 2007
Format:Hardcover
As a teacher and mommy, I love this book! The illustrations are wonderfully amusing and brightly colored. The story itself is a great perspective on the life of a spider and preconceptions about spiders. It is an excellent lead-in for writers' workshop. My son LOVES the predictable pattern, and at 14 months he would say "Aaargh!" and "Go!" with me as I'd read. This is a wonderful addition to the family/classroom library.
