I purchased this CD expecting a LOT. I have been an avid Aaliyah fan ever since the first time I heard "Are You The Somebody" off of the Dr. Dolittle Soundtrack, but I had never purchased any of her CD's. After purchasing this CD and it finally arrived, I couldn't put it in the CD player fast enough. I found out that there truly was good reason behind it too. Not only do you get amazing songs off of her America release album but you also get bonus tracks as well. I would say this is without a doubt worth the extra dollars. With tracks like "Loose Rap", "It's Whatever", "More Than A Woman", "Try Again" and my all time favorite song "Rock the Boat", this CD is sure to be a hit!In loving memory of Aaliyah

The blueprint to all RnB albums of the future....,
By Octagon (England) - See all my reviews

A MUST HAVE album.
This album shaped and formed how future RnB albums should be and will sound like. Still the quality and fluidity of this album is still unmatched today, and I don't think it ever will be. Aaliyah set her own mark with 'One in a million' (which was considered a landmark RnB album of the 90s also), and she did exactly the same thing with her self titled album. This album was so far ahead of its time. It excelled 'One in a million' in each and every way possible. Aaliyah showed that she could progress and evolve within her musical style and her flowing vocals. Overall the production is top notch. Timbalands beats are on point as usual, very creative and very modern. This is a very creative album in every way, and is probably the most influential and top quality Pop/RnB album of recent times. This shaped how an RnB/Pop album would be in this new millennium. I don't think it gets any better than this. R.I.P. Aaliyah you are sadly missed.

Aaliyah's Swan Songs,
By
This review is from: Aaliyah (Dig) (Audio CD)
This is Aaliyah's best album by far and it's also Timbaland's best work to date. This in my opinion is an urban classic. It's one of those albums that is still going to sound hot twenty years from now. It's 2008 and I've been rocking this album since it first came out. You never get tired of it. The ballads are beautiful and the club bangers are club worthy even today. Get this album before it's gone for good, you will not be disappointed.

This album is great all the way through from beginning to end. I did buy this album back in 2001, but recently re-bought the album because the one I have is a bit scratched now. Been an Aaliyah fan since 94, so it was a no brainer to buy this album again. Every Aaliyah fan own this album.

For a long time i wanted this version of this album and now i finally got it.I couldn't be more content especially with song try again. It's so sad Aaliyah died at such a young age because she was getting ready to take off. Most of her songs were amazing and she sounded like a sweet and kind person with her soft voice. What a beautiful soul. This record represents a beautiful soul.May she rest in peace. She shall soar in heaven.

Let me start this off by saying, Im a huge Aaliyah fan. I loved all of her work since her last album, One In A Million. On her 3rd Disc, Aaliyah takes a more mature sound, and also a more mature and sexier image.
Aaliyah was a risk taker. For one, she only has THREE tracks (four if you include Try Again) That has been produced by Timbaland and only one that was penned my Missy Elliot. A bulk of this album was produced by underground, lesser known producers and songwriters. Lets break each song down. 1. We Need A Resolution. Ah, the first track and first single off the album. The songs talks about problems in a relationship. While 2001 was an era of happy go lucky music full or r & b singers and rapper cameos, Aaliyah takes a different route and comes with a gothic arabic song. I can see why it didnt fair well on the charts. This song is really ahead of it's time. Aaliyah never really followed trends and she always put her craft before her sales. 5/5. 2. Loose Rap This song is the most interesting, the beat sounds like something from TLC's "fanmail" album. In this song, Aaliyah and her songriter Static (who was also her temporary Boyfriend) adresses people that were hating on her and her music camp. Aaliyah plays it cool, telling her haters she's not worried about them in the least thought. This is one of my faves. 5/5 3. Rock The Boat The second single from the album. This song is the biggest single off the album (in the states). why wouldnt it be? It's smooth, sensual, and sexy as hell. It gives you an island vibe. It's catchy too. "work the middle, change postiions." Aaliyah is telling her man how to work the bedroom. If there is ever a way talking about sex in a classy way, Aaliyah does it and does it well. Sadly the video claimed her life 5/5. 4.More Than A Woman If Aaliyah was going for high album sales, this should have been the first single. It's pop, it's fun, and it's memorable. It's her biggest hit off the album (overseas). It's like the sequel to the 2000 hit "Try Again". again, Timbaland samples some arabic beats. Aaliyah is telling her lover not to underestimate her. 5/5 5.Never No More A sad song. Aaliyah tackles physical abuse in relationships in this one. I love the beat, and the bridge is the best part. You could really feel what she's saying. 5/5 6.I Care 4 U This is the only song Missy Elliot penned for the album, sadly. This song has a classic feel, like the temptations or some other music band from the 50's. Aaliyah talks about caring for a man if he is heartbroken. Alot of older people fall in love with this song and Aaliyah proves that her voice is far more stronger than that of Janet Jackson or Ciara. This ballad is just beautiful, and it was also Aaliyah's favorite off the album. 5/5 7. Extra Smooth This is an upbeat song, and it's the perfect way to get the party back started after the two previous ballads. The beat is hot, and it has seductive lyrics. The song talks about A man trying to get at Aaliyah, but he's trying to hard to be smooth. The song is cool, but the hook is kinda weak. 4/5 8.Read Between The Lines Aaliyah talks about confronting a cheating man. Aaliyah fuses hip hop and latin/salsa music in this one. I think this song is considered "filler". I usually skip this one. The album would have been MUCH better without this song. 2.5/5 9.U Got Nerve In This song, Aaliyah channels her biggest idol, Janet Jackson. She comes with attitude, but stil plays it cool. Aaliyah tells her Boyfriend she's tired of his bull. The beat is unique, and the hook is great. The pop effects also add some flavor. One of my favorties. 4/5 10. I Refuse This is arguably her most crafty song off the album. It reminds you of the legend of sleepy hollow (the headless horseman). The piano is just beautiful, and Aaliyah's voice is beautiful. Aaliyah talks about she's tired of letting her man break her heart. However, unlike her stellar vocal performance on "I Care 4 U", Aaliyah "dumbs down" her vocals, and holds back on her vocal abilities. and The song is also quite long, but ever second is worth the listen. I still love this track though. 5/5 11. It's Whatever Aaliyah talks about being in love (Damon Dash?). This track is just soothing and great. Aaliyah goes back into angellic mode, and rides her lullaby type vocals like the waves of the water. The lyrics are really touching and many couples could relate. 4/5 12.I Can Be This song is just pure awesomeness. Aaliyah fuses Rock with a dash of hip hop. Aaliyah talks about her desire of being with a man, the desire is so bad, that she doesnt care about being his mistress. The beat is dark, edgy, and demanding. I think this song woulda did well as a single. It's kinda short, but trust me, The epicness makes up for it. 5/5 13.Those Were The Days This song is just awesome. It has potential to be a summer anthem. Would have been a great single choice. Aaliyah talks about her boyfriend not being the same as he was when they were first dating. The beat is amazing, and the verses are more catchy than the hook. It just makes people get up and dance. It's a great female anthem. 4/5 14.What If Unlike "I Can be", This song is 100 % heavy metal. The production is loud and messy. Aaliyah's voice has the edginess for the track, but not the agressiveness. She shoulda pushed her voice a bit more because I could barely hear what she's saying. Aaliyah talks about a hypocrital cheating boyfriend. Aaliyah talks about cutting him and even killing him. The song is not as great as "I Can Be" but I still like it. 3.5/5 15. Try Again Does this song REALLY need a description? It's the biggest hit of her career and even broke a billboard record. It's fun, pop, and catchy. The video is hot too with a Jet Li Cameo. This is the song that made me obessesed with Aaliyah. This is a GREAT way to close the album out. 5/5 OVERALL GRADE: 67/75= 89% B+ This is an amazing album, with only no more than two or three below average tracks. This album should have won a grammy, because Aaliyah took R & b to a whole new level and this album has not one ounce of repetetive commercial music. This album could be released today and still not sound out of place. That takes a true artist. RIP Aaliyah, you and your music will be forever remembered.
