4.0 out of 5 stars Gives a bit more insight; helps with the healing process
I read this in one day; it's an easy read, and still feeling the loss over Aaliyah that I do, I had no desire to put it down. Farley (obviously being a TIME writer) does a very nice job here. He gives background, not just on Aaliyah but on a good deal of music history that influenced Aaliyah and her generation. There is not a great deal in here that fans have not read in...

Okay,I am a Aalyiah fan, and I am a person who loves to read. So when this book came out I ran to get it. I would not recommend this book to anyone who has cable or internet access. The information in this book was stuff that I could see on E's true hollywood story or VH1's behind the music or visiting a website. This book did not offer anything we already didn't know...

There is not a great deal in here that fans have not read in newspapers or heard on MTV and the like, but what Farley does do is offer a point for fans to begin healing. Farley offers at a point in the book, Why Aaliyah? What is the meaning behind it? I honed in on this because I can't count how many times I questioned God on this. He writes, "What is the answer to the riddle of tragedy... Simply by caring, by connecting emotionally to [this] event we give [it] meaning. In other words, the search for meaning itself can be meaningless. We create the meaning ourselves; what we take from such experiences is entirely in our own hands."
Farley clearly had a deep respect and like for Aaliyah and it shows. This is a very intelligently and thoughtfully written piece. I did learn a few new things, which I was happy about. Aaliyah, as Farley states, will never become a has-been, some aging soul star doing jigs onstage with the likes of a Justin Timberlake type. (I like Timberlake, but the point is well made.) Aaliyah is forever perfect; God never gave her an opportunity to mess up, to wrinkle, to be forgotten. He really exhalted her higher than she would have ever been down here on earth, where us carnal folk revel in the screw ups of those famous and privledged few. She is forever beautiful, talented and respected. Her spirit will always be gentle, her smile always bright. Farley, thanks for taking the time to do this, I appreciate it and I know Aaliyah's fans will too. It means a lot to know you cared enough to help us understand this wonderful young woman a little bit more. To Aaliyah's family, I am always praying for you! She was the best!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars wonderfull book about a wonderful star, January 11, 2002
This review is from: Aaliyah : More Than a Woman (Mass Market Paperback)
I think all r&b music fans can agree that aaliyahs death was a tradegy. She will be greatly missed. It was obvious there would be plenty of tributes and books for her. The first and best aaliyah book is More than a woman by Christopher John Farley. Wonderfully written and put together. Great pictures too. Only thing is the cursing here and there not a major problem but MF word comes up a few times. But simply a fantastic book. I learned some things i never knew. You will basicly learn about her life her music movies friends family and even about the music industry in general. The perfect book for the ultimate aaliyah fan.

RIP

The information in this book was stuff that I could see on E's true hollywood story or VH1's behind the music or visiting a website. This book did not offer anything we already didn't know about Aaliyah. So if you have cable or internet, don't get it. It was rushed and hurried. I think the person who wrote the book was looking for a quick dollar. If a book is going to come out, it should be written or influenced by those who KNEW her.

5.0 out of 5 stars Aaliyah wasn't one in a million, she was the one and only!, December 10, 2001
This review is from: Aaliyah : More Than a Woman (Mass Market Paperback)
First off I want to say that I know the devastation that's being felt right now with the loss of Aaliyah. As a music inspiration, Aaliyah showed the world what she had to offer. Her music, her talent, HER SOUL. She was a truly beautiful woman.

This book was a great griefing method for me to accept what happend. It was written very insightfully. It talked about her career in both acting and music, her family, friends, and fans, and just the way Aaliyah touched us on this earth.

Easily said, this book was just what an Aaliyah fan would like. As one myself, the book touched me deeply. Aaliyah's spirit and soul will live on forever. God Bless!

4.0 out of 5 stars solid Read, January 5, 2002
This review is from: Aaliyah : More Than a Woman (Mass Market Paperback)
it's cool that Christopher John Farley did this book.I've read His Work in Time Magazine&He is a Cool Writer.Aaliyah was something else. She was One of those People that Had that "IT".I think She&2Pac in the last 10 years had that kind of It that you can't teach.I didn't think He was a Great Rapper&I didn't find Her to Be a Great Singer but there Overall Presentation took things to a whole different level&you couldn't ignore how they vibed. Both to Me were Meant for the Big Screen.Aaliyah did so much from her time Here on earth.Music,Movies,Modeling&just being a Down Home kind of FOlk.CLassy&Yet Challenging.easy to Reach but also a Mystery. She was something else&Very Beautiful as a Person&The Vibe She Gave Off.R.I.P

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book ever, January 3, 2002

This book was amzing. It changed my life. When I first heared Aaliyah's voice I said to my self she is going to be a star.Even though I am only 13, I bought all three of her CD's twice. My favorite CD that she recorded would have to be her first one "Age Ani't Notin' But A Number" because I can relate to every song on that album.Just like I have A 14 yer old girl friend my mom and her dad are trying to keep us apart. But all age is , is a number.

This review is from: Aaliyah : More Than a Woman (Mass Market Paperback)
Produced mainly for the adolescent market, "Aaliyah: More Than a Woman" by Christopher John Farley is a good biography on the life of the R&B singer who was tragically taken away in August 2001. As a paperback book, this book will make a great read during a trip or at the school library, however since it was released so quickly to the market shortly after her death, the book lacks the qualities you'll find in a longer, well-researched biography. It would have been much more enjoyable to read if Aaliyah's family and closest friends provided the author with anecdotes and/or memories about Aaliyah that would have made this biography feel more personal.

While it falls short on content, "Aaliyah: More Than a Woman" is a good read for those who know little or nothing about this amazing young lady. If you're an avid Aaliyah fan, I would wait until there is a hardbound biography produced in collaboration with Aaliyah's family.

3.0 out of 5 stars GOOD.BUT OFF TOPIC TO MUCH AND LOSING INTEREST, December 28, 2003
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Aaliyah : More Than a Woman (Mass Market Paperback)
I like the book but it goes off topic to much. For example ,Chapter 9 which is about Aaliyah and Damon Dash it talks about other people alot and a little about them. How Rocafella got started,Bad Boy,etc....,The type of money they were making. He talked about Aaliyah and Damon for like ,at the most ,4 pages and the chapter was more than 15 pages. It was suspose to be a love story of the 2 but it wasn't.Beyonce is more in that chapter than Damon and he is in the headline title. He talks about every thing except what he was suspose to be talking about. It seems like he was trying to go around the topic but still put it in the book.Another example is at the end, where he suspose to be talking about the MTV Music Award, the tribute to Aaliyah, and he starts talking about what he seen, like I want to know about Busta Rhymes.I'm going to take a little bit of the story from the book, he's says:"On my way in,I saw Busta Rhymes going past the ticket-takers with a four-member posse in tow[somehow I imagined Busta with a much bigger posse].A few moments later I nearly ran into Jon Bon Jovi in the hallway wearing a big cowboy hat[he's bigger than you might expect, but then again that might have been the hat].This book gives you an personal look on Aaliyah peers. If you like P.diddy etc..,you can get a little bio on him.It talks about Aaliyah , may be some things you didnt know ,but everytime I got into it he would talk about someone else for paragraphs sometimes pages. He had me turing pages to get back to the topic of Aaliyah.Oueen of the Damned wasn't one of the best movies of all time ,I would REWIND the movie to get to the part with Aaliyah, because the other parts wasn't just that worthy like the book.I took Aaliyah serious as an actress even though the movie wasnt all that she played her part the best.AALIYAH your still the hottest star ever and always will be.
