Book Description

3 and up
Aaron loves animals more than anything else in the world. But when he is diagnosed with allergies, the doctor tells him that his pets -- a dog, a cat, six kittens and six guinea pigs -- have got to go. After Aaron reluctantly finds each pet a new home, he discovers other ways to make animals a part of his life. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America reports that an estimated one in every five adults and children suffers from allergies. Aaron's Awful Allergies will have special appeal for those millions of children living with allergies.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 1--Aaron loves his house full of pets, but when he is diagnosed with allergies, he must find new homes for his dog, cats, and guinea pigs. While he is upset at having to do so, he eventually realizes that his goldfish is fun, as are the butterflies and frogs he finds outside. The text only touches on the actual discussion of allergies, focusing more on the child's feelings. The tone of the writing is warm, and the colorful gouache illustrations add humorous touches while capturing Aaron's devastation at losing his beloved animals and his gradual acceptance of his problem. A useful book to help young allergy sufferers to realize that there is indeed life after furry pets.

Review

The beauty of Troon Harrison’s story is in its emotional impact on the reader, the support and understanding Aaron receives from he family, and the simple but fulfilling way he comes to terms with his loss. Aaron’s Awful Allergies could be an excellent source of hope and inspiration for families having to cope with the changes allergies can impose on your children’s lifestyle. (St. John’s Evening Telegram )

It’s a cruel trick of nature: those who dearly love animals are often apt to be the most allergic to their pets. [Aaron’s Awful Allergies was labeled “Outstanding” according to Parent Council. It’s an important source of help for parents who are told the awful words, “Get rid of your pets.” Aaron is miserable, inconsolable. But the solution, a fish, is a happy one, one that might, eventually appeal to some children. It worked for Aaron. (The First Coast Parent, Jacksonville, FL )

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books I ever bought for my son, November 9, 2006
By
My son had always wanted a pet so this past summer I bought him the cutest 8 wk. old new puppy you had ever seen; we had the best month with her getting to know her, bonding and falling head over heels in love with her; then about a little over a month after i had bought her, my son and I started developing allergies to her that progressively got worse so we took her back to the shelter which is the hardest thing I had ever personally had to do; although we only had her a month, the bond with her and my son was something to see and we cried and were heartbroken for the longest of times; i then searched amazon for a children's book about it and was very grateful to find Aaron's Awful Allergies; it really helped my son and I accept that we just could not have her and that we were not the only ones out there with similar allergies; the book was a lifesaver!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book!, August 29, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Aaron's Awful Allergies (Hardcover)
Aaron's Awful Allergies is one of my favorite children's books, partly because it's very well written, with a cute twist at the end, and partly because my son has annoying allergies, so we can really identify with Aaron. I'd recommend this book to anyone!
