Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
England's critically acclaimed quintet Gomez create music steeped in rock, pop, blues, funk, soul, and just about anything else they can get their crafty hands on. The use of three lead singers never varies the sound by much--they mostly recall Eddie Vedder and Joe Cocker with a pinch of Tom Waits on the rough end. Abandoned Shopping Trolley Hotline is a compilation of oddball tracks that have been accumulating as import single B-sides and outtakes. "Shitbag 9," the opening track, is a spontaneous studio field holler, whereas "Buena Vista" is an atmospheric nine-minute psychedelic suite. Two BBC live recordings ("78 Stone Shuffle," "Steve McCroski") feature the band in a refreshingly loose groove, stumbling around with a sense of mischief and energy absent from their carefully considered studio productions. Perhaps, most intriguingly, the band's included their version of the Beatles' "Getting Better," (recorded by Gomez at Abbey Road Studios), which became familiar to most of us as part of Phillips Electronics ad campaign. --Rob O'Connor

5.0 out of 5 stars Another beautiful Gomez CD, October 11, 2000
By Justin Baraga (Pittsburgh, PA) - See all my reviews
Abandoned is a typical Gomez CD - in all of the good ways. But just like "Bring it On" and "Liquid Skin", you won't fall in love with it until the third or fourth time you listen to it. This album and the accompanying Machismo EP are full of previously unreleased stuff, as well as new takes on Gomez favorites like "78 Stone Shuffle/Wobble" and "We Haven't Turned Around." Gomez loyalists will be thrilled to actually have a version of the Beatles "Getting Better" that they didn't have to download off of Napster (those unfamiliar with Gomez will immediately recognize it as "the song from the Philips flat-screen TV commercial." You know..."I've got to admit it's getting better, getting better all the time.")

I highly recommend this CD to those who have already played their copies of Bring it On and Liquid Skin to death and are looking for some new material. If you're thinking about buying your first Gomez CD, though, you'll probably want to cut your teeth on their first release "Bring it On", and then on to "Liquid Skin". This album is incredible, but you won't really appreciate it if you aren't already familiar with their earlier stuff.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not the best of Gomez, December 28, 2000
By Gomez fan (Melrose Park, Il USA) - See all my reviews
I am a huge fan of Gomez. The first 2 albums are classics and are completely overlooked. I can't believe that this album is getting such good reviews. Buena Vista is the only song which is at the level of Bring it on or Liquid Skin. These are almost all songs that they didn't think were good enough to put on the first 2 albums but they had enough of them to make some money. I am sure that there next studio album will be another masterpiece but, this one is far from the best Gomez.

4.0 out of 5 stars diamond in the rough, November 12, 2003
By Brian Cookson "brutus daoson" (Greenville, RI United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
if only to hear buena vista alone, it is worth it to pick this album up. i would give it 5 stars, but i need to be realistic in that, sure, this album is meant for the fans in particular. the other reviewers who say they are "the hugest" fans and loved the first two albums but can't get a feel for this one... well, they really aren't such fans as they say, and that's all.

so obviously you need more reasons than just buena vista to buy this, cuz you're skeptical enough to be reading this. ok, then listen for waster, flavors, getting better, bring your lovin back here, touchin' up, and machismo.

and rosemary. simply amazing. the atmosphere that this song creates is simply astounding. each note sinks deep into your veins, and penetrates your senses.

so buy it.
