By joining Methodist circuit-rider Peter Cartwright on his trip to start new missions in the West, Gil finally gets an opportunity to search. But when he locates his mother, he discovers she now has a new life in the tribe, with a husband and children she cannot abandon. Believing his dreams of a family life are not meant to be, he returns to Cartwright and, with the man's guidance, comes to accept God as his Father and Heaven as his home. Part of the Trailblazer Books series, which is intended to introduce children to Christian heroes in history, this gives young readers a glimpse of Cartwright's impact on Illinois politics and religious development.
