I have 5 copies of Abby and the Hopplescotch Realm in my library at school and it is nearly as popular as Harry Potter especially with the girls. It is like reading a modern day "Famous Five"adventure in a fantasy world.

Reminiscent of some of Diana Wynne Jones' writing, but on a less professional level. A relatively well paced novel with a wide cast of characters and a few quirks to the plot. I did not, however, find the writing style overly enticing (perhaps as I am an adult reading books intended for a younger audience) and it still suffers from a few minor typos. Also, I was a little confused - this is the first book in the series, is it not? The main plot point seemed to hark back to another story, speaking of Agnes defeat at the hands of Muriel (or was it?) which makes me wonder if there is maybe a short story or something out there. If this isn't a follow-up, certain things - such as the fact that Abby's twin (also called Abby) is the actual Key, and the Abby of this story is a decoy, are just confusing. Indeed, I could not quite understand how it was likely to have twins with the same name. Unless one was from an alternate dimension or something.

The creatures that live in the Hopplescotch realm sounded rather intriguing - I would have liked to see more of those and maybe some more descriptions.

Overall, an entertaining enough book, but the writing style seemed a little unpolished and did not flow very easily.

A Kid's Review on October 30, 2012
Format: Kindle Edition
This was a really good book. I'm a ten year old boy and this book was fun for my mom and I to take turns with. It was too long for me to really read myself, but we traded and read one chapter each night. I can't wait to download the next book! I got an A on the book report I did for school :)

I found the book to be a wonderfully imaginative and creative story where I quickly became fully immersed in the lives of Abby and her friends as they do their own detective work to save the realms. It is full of twists and turns to keep the reader guessing with the introduction of the most charming characters. Each and every character in this book takes on a life of their own and very quickly becomes an integral part of the story.

This book is written with a wonderful insight of people. Julie Folkers has managed create an atmosphere whereby the human characters act in such a life-like way that you would believe them to be real.

It is not often I find a book that my twelve year old son, my nine year old daughter and myself are all completely engrossed in from start to finish.

A book I highly recommend for children, young adults and adults who are children at heart.
