Was doing some idle web browsing about a week ago when I discovered that Chumbawamba was releasing a new album, 'Abcdefg,' and having been a fan since they hit the radio with 'Tubthumping' (later discovering their earlier works and loving those just as much), I jumped on this purchase as soon as it became available. If you expect this to be like 'Tubthumper' or 'WYSIWYG,' you're probably not familiar with what they've been doing. Since those albums, they've removed most of the electric instruments and now do acoustic, folky, and sometimes acapella tunes. Despite this change, they still deliver a great listening experience, with plenty of catchy tunes. If any other band tried not limiting themselves to the genre people know them for, I think it likely they'd fail hard. Chumbawamba, on the other hand, has always made great, listenable, and catchy music regardless of the style in which they did it, whether it be their initial punk style, their later pop-influenced style, or their current acoustic-folk style. They may be a 'one hit wonder' band in many people's eyes, but it's clear they don't care and are even willing to poke fun at themselves, as on 'Torturing James Hetfield:'

"Now look what we've brought for you, James/Your favorite disc/It's Chumawamaba/Their Greatest Hits (There's only one)..."

In short, I'd highly recommend this album if you've been a fan, if you once were a fan, or really, if you like music. Chumbawamba hasn't let me down once yet when it comes to entertainment. Having listened through this album three times now, that record remains unbroken.

Also recommended by Chumbawamba: 'Showbusiness,' 'Readymades,' 'Un,' and 'A Singsong and a Scrap.'
