Abdel Wright was born in Trinityville, St. Thomas. His single parent mother was diagnosed with mental illness and he was taken as an infant to live at several Government childrens homes before ending up at SOS Childrens Village a foster home in Stony Hill run by an Austrian charitable foundation and heavily sponsored by the late singer Johnny Cash. Cash owned a villa in Montego Bay and when Abdel was moved to the SOS Childrens Village in that city, he came in contact with the celebrated singer who often visited the home, playing his songs and accompanying himself on the guitar. For the fatherless Abdel, Johnny Cash was his role model. "I always wanted to be like Johnny Cash," he admits with a smile.
Plans for Abdel by his music company include many tours, as well as collaborating on an album with U2s Bono. With the attention and admiration of such major music stars, Abdel will not remain an unknown for much longer.

Time will tell,
By Tika (Jamaica) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Abdel Wright (Audio CD)
I have had the honor of seeing Abdel Wright perform live and while it may be felt that his importance goes only as far as 'record sales or distribution ranges' i attest to Abdel's passion and depth towards the messages in the music and the realities of Jamaica. It may also be said that the music is 'radio friendly' but the music of Bob Marley that is heard today was also made radio friendly by Chris Blackwell when he marketed Marley to the world as he too understood that sometimes people only listen to real talent when they are coaxed. I believe that indeed time will tell and people will one day see how true and real Abdel Wright really is.

U2's Bono described Abdel as the most significant musician to come out of Jamaica since Bob Marley. If he continues releasing albums of this quality, that will prove very true. I bought it after hearing Quicksand, and expected it to be more or less reggae. It is reggae in some ways, but owes just as much to acoustic folk and even country music. I don't know what to call it but "good"... I certainly hope he generates enough commercial success to ensure a steady flow of albums and tours, because this guy's music is really good.

great new reggae arist, and cd,
By Evan Kendall "Evan" (Marthas Vineyard, MA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Abdel Wright (Audio CD)
Abdel Wright is great! His politically fired lyrics and topics show what corruption is still in the world today. The hit, Quicksand, has a great sound with harmonica, drums, and other instruments. The whole CD is great for any fan of reggae or music in general. It has a soft sound with good words.
