Book Description

September 5, 2011
Elizabeth Gardner (Lizzy) is seventeen-years old when she tells her parents she’s going out with her girlfriends. Instead, she meets up with Jared Shayne, her boyfriend of two years. As she walks home beneath an inky black sky, her perfect night becomes her worst nightmare. Fourteen years later, Lizzy is a licensed PI known as the “one who got away.” When she’s not searching for runaway teenagers, working on insurance scams, or talking to her therapist, she’s at the local high school teaching young girls to defend themselves. But her world is turned upside down for the second time after she receives a call from Jared Shayne. He’s an FBI special agent now and he needs her help. Lizzy has no plans to get involved. Not until Jared tells her the kidnapper left her a note. Escaping from a madman should have been the end of her nightmare…but it was only the beginning.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"The satisfyingly frightful episode of a calculating cutthroat."  ~Kirkus Reviews

This is the kind of book where you resent the intrusions of real life that force you to put it down. Well, most of the time. Sometimes it was so intense and scary, I HAD to put it down! A terrific pace and a complex plot that kept me guessing. ~Norah Wilson, author of the Serve and Protect Series

"Ragan executes this spine-chilling thriller with such razor-sharp precision readers are left breathless." ~Romantic Times, 4 1/2 TOP PICK

More About the Author

Theresa didn't know she wanted to be a writer until she read Jude Deveraux's A Knight in Shining Armor in 1992. She spent the next five years researching medieval times and writing Return of the Rose. She was also working full time and raising four children, but she knew she was a writer when nothing could stop her from getting the words to the page.

She has garnered six Golden Heart nominations in Romance Writers of America's prestigious Golden Heart Competition for her work. After writing for 20 years, Theresa decided to self-publish and she is so glad she did! Since 2011, Theresa has sold over 550,000 books and signed her first publishing contract with Thomas & Mercer. On April 10, 2013, Theresa Ragan became a New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author.

Theresa writes medieval time travels, contemporary romance, romantic suspense, and thrillers under the name T.R. Ragan.

5.0 out of 5 stars CREEPY but great thriller. June 29, 2011
By Ann
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
New author took me by surprise with this thriller. Lizzy and her boyfriend are together for the last night before he leaves for college. She's snuck out to be with him and she has him let her off down the block from home so her dad won't find out. As a result Lizzy, is one of the teenage girls kidnapped and tortured by a serial killer but escapes after a few months. Fast forward 10 years, the serial killer returns and is out to get Lizzy - the one that got away. Lizzy`s high school boyfriend is now an FBI agent and Lizzy is practicing as a PI and an instructor teaching high school girls how to defend themselves. Lizzy has loads of mental and emotional problems and is still struggling to overcome the terror she experienced at the hands of the killer. She and Jared both have tons of guilt issues over it all.

Let me tell you the serial killer is just downright creepy. The guy's nicknamed "Spiderman" for a reason. This book labeled as a romantic suspense is heavy on the thriller/suspense and very, very light on the romance. Jared and Lizzy's story is still a good one as they try to reconnect after everything that's happened in the last 10 years. Lizzy's character develops slowly as the story moves along and there are times I wondered if she'd ever be able to move forward. The torture scenes are graphically detailed which intensifies the creep factor. The side characters are realistic and I was amazed at how Lizzy, Jared and Spiderman's family dynamics twist and turn. The story is nicely woven together for a terrific ending. The story keeps you guessing and on the edge of your seat the entire time. Totally engrossing and a terrific read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great thriler but a strong stomach is needed September 19, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I enjoyed the book, it was well crafted and well paced. The story about Lizzy's life after being abducted moves quickly and you find yourself quickly intertwined in her life.

I read mostly mysteries but this was harder to get through because of the child sexual abuse, multiple mutilations and animal cruelty. Some of it in my opinion was to much - ever single character was emotionally scarred. As a pet lover and cat owner what happens to Lizzy's cat was too much for me.

I would read another of Ragan's book and hopefully it's not as dark.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must Read ! June 18, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Abducted.. 17 year old Lizzy Gardner is abducted when returning from a night out with her boyfriend of two years. Held for two months by a diabolical monster, she witnesses the torture and murder of several other girls before she makes a daring escape. 14 years later, the monster resurfaces and is determined to capture the "one who got away" and make her pay. Lizzy, who still struggles with memories, flashbacks and survivor's guilt, along with Jared, the ex-boyfriend who never stopped loving her, work together to find and stop the killer.

This story is fast paced, thrilling and full of non-stop action. I couldn't put it down. The writing is excellent and I absolutely loved the Heroine and Hero and the secondary character Haley (I really hope to see a story for Haley). If you like Lisa Gardner, Beverly Barton, Laura Lippman and the like, you will find in this author, a new favorite.

Theresa, where you been girl? I'm looking forward to reading all you have. Congratulations on your thriller debut!

2.0 out of 5 stars ridiculous November 5, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I purchased this book because of the great reviews but I was surprised at just how bad the book was. There are so many completely implausible events that the book is insulting.
Just about everyone in the book forgets their cell phone in their car, just as they need it, or they have a dead battery. There's a deranged killer on the loose and he's clearly after a few specific people, but nobody wants to change their lives, including the mother of a targeted teenager.
After killing a number of young girls, the police never realized a very obvious connection to all of them. I could go on and on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chilling tale with great characters June 17, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
A great heroine - strong, haunted, flawed, determined, with a horrible event in her past. And a villain who was very, very well done. I shut my windows while reading the book and checked all doors and windows after as well...

The rest of the cast was excellent too. I felt like I was reading (and caring) about real people. A secondary character (don't want to spoil who for anyone else, as I was never sure while reading the book as to who was going to make it) was one of the best I've read in a long time. I LOVED the person.

T.R. Ragan is a new-to-me author and I am eager to read her next work (but with my windows shut from the start)!

2.0 out of 5 stars Fire the editor! September 29, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
The storyline wasn't bad, which is why I gave this book two stars instead of one, but the writing was atrocious! I'll start with the inaccuracies. One of the characters claims that her sister was kidnapped 14 years earlier, when she herself was seven years old. Then she says "I'm nineteen." Last time I checked, that was only 12 years. There are numerous errors like this.

Then there's the awful and very out-of-place and unnecessary sex scene complete with this line: "...she drank in the sight of him as he stood before her in all his glory." I don't mind a cliche or two, but that was a bit much for me.

What bothered me the most, though, were the grammatical errors throughout the book. Things like this: "Nine o'clock the next morning Lizzy and Jared were once again at the FBI headquarters in San Francisco. Ten minutes ago, they were ushered into a conference room..." Call me a stickler for grammar if you want, but that made me cringe -- it should have read: "Ten minutes EARLIER, they HAD BEEN ushered into a conference room." There are repeated cases of incorrect tenses and even incorrect use of relative pronouns ("which" being used to refer to people, for example). An educated reader can only be so tolerant of poor English.

Did this book have no editor? If there was one, he was asleep on the job!
