ea. vol: 111p. maps. photos. reprods. bibliog. glossary. index. (Indians of North America Series). CIP. Chelsea House. 1989. PLB $16.95. Gr 6-10-- Two additions to the series that are well illustrated, readable, and well researched. The books do much to correct an image of the American Indian as a heathen savage, and instead suggest both the cultural history of the native Americans as well as the treatment they received at the hands of the white men. Both books cover origins of the tribes, lifestyles, customs and beliefs, creative arts, and history. While the books will be most interesting to students who live in the states that were the original homelands of these tribes, the audience will be larger than that. Each book contains a section of color photographs, black-and-white maps and photographs, and illustrations. The Narragansett includes recipes for the traditional johnnycake and cornmeal porridge. Clearly and concisely writ: ten, both volumes will fill in some blank pages of American history and give young readers an idea of the native American heritage. --Yvonne A.
