5 of 5 people found the following review helpful By Daniel Ponder on June 19, 2009
Format: Audio CD
This disc of Buxtehude's chamber music (though out of print is included in the 50 Years of Deutsche Harmonia Mundi set) is a must have. The music is taken from several sources, some chamber pieces for strings and continuo, the first and fifth works are organ pieces, and one is an instrumental/organ version from his cantata 76 "With joy and happiness I leave this world." The playing is well executed by Skip Sempe, an authoritative source on early music, the sound of the recording is fresh and enjoyable to listen too from a scholarly aspect and entertainment value. Admittedly, after a while the ensemble and music does tend to blend without the organ's change of registration and voices in the original versions of the works, but it's a fine disc of Buxtehude's non vocal or strictly keyboard music (which is very little). A must have for any baroque music fan or scholar.

I like this disc!

The variety of music, the excellent playing of Capriccio Stravagante. The melodies are sometimes lively, sometimes contemplative, always interesting. The organ/continuo moves things along nicely, the strings spin their tale.

I confess to already being a fan of Dietrich Buxtehude's chamber music so you may want to adjust this review by taking half a star off..?
