Editorial Reviews

Subeer Kumar (Amitabh) is well on his way to becoming India's number 1 pop singer. He has no intentions of getting married, but when he goes to visit his Durga Mausi (mother's sister), he falls in love with Uma,a religious and simple girl.He is enchanted by her voice and marries her.He returns to Mumbai, where he announces that he will never sing without Uma . However,he encourages Uma to sing alone.Soon she becomes more popular than him and from here on the seeds of jealousy begin to grow. The major difference between Uma and Subeer is that she sings for herself, whereas he sings for the public. It is the difference between geet and sangeet. This is the root for problems that crop up later in their lives, and based on this the movie is named Abhimaan.Jaya Bachchan's performance is stupendous in the movie

Abhimaan is a delight for fans of vintage Bollywood. The storyline is simple, cool pop singer meets innocent and beautiful village girl they marry and things go awry when her talent outshines his. The songs in the movie are superb S D Burman at his best. The DVD has a song selection with English subtitles so English-speaking viewers can interpret the songs. I had been singing one for years without really knowing what the lyrics meant at all. Now I know!
The saris worn by the female cast are a delight to behold so any sari enthusiasts will find this a wonderful source of beautiful saris. This is a movie that does not fade with time. It is eminently watchable and I know I will be watching it again and again!Abhimaan

This is a 4-star movie with 2-star subtitles.

Bollywood has a bit of a reputation for all-out, ensemble dance numbers. There's none of that here. Just simple love ballads for the most part, musically speaking.

The acting, and especially the music and wardrobe, are all very good. The story is reasonably simple: pop star Subir meets and marries beautiful girl Uma, someone who is at least as talented a singer as he. He shares the spotlight with her, introducing her to the performance and recording business. Through no fault of her own, she becomes at least as successful, if not more so, which leads to feelings of jealousy in Subir.

From there, the story explores the consequences and struggles, mostly surrounding Subir's own self-centeredness and the effect that has on himself and his close family members, including Uma.

The movie was released in 1973 and, considering the date and the apparent low budget and lack of niceties like camera dollies and cranes, is a very artistic and well-done production.

The main problem with the film is simply this particular subtitled release: the subtitles themselves are just awful. If they were any worse, they'd be useless and the movie would be unwatchable. As it is, they are sufficient to get the basic idea of the story and plot developments, but there are plenty of places where what are likely important cultural overtones are simply lost, and where even the basic grammar and language requires a fair amount of gap-filling just to figure out what they are saying. To make matter worse, in many places the subtitle is not even shown long enough to be comprehended. Thank goodness for streaming video with pause and rewind!

This is one of my most favorite movies. Amitabh and Jaya at the peak of their careers, portray husband and wives in this movie. Some say it has a bit of real life element in it aswell.

But I like the movie primarily for its songs. All the songs are just too good.

Although the movie is older, the theme is still a struggle between genders today. No matter the culture ego can rule and humility is not always considered as the best approach for resolution.

08-11-13 Great movie! Great songs!... It begins very slowly but stick w/ it; you won't be disappointed... The young Jaya B. has an uncanny resemblance to Kokona Sharma Sen (or Sen Sharma)...

Not a great story but just ok. The movie kind of ended abruptly. Worth watching once.
It's an old movie and therefore picture quality is average.
