3 of 3 people found the following review helpful By Bernard Jacobson on May 14, 2013
Some years ago, a perceptive young critic with whom I was discussing differences of opinion about various kinds of contemporary music remarked, "Oh, well, [x] loves nervous music, and you don't." Indeed, I realized for the first time consciously that what I love in the best contemporary scores is the feeling that they give instruments or voices the time to make their effect without haste or stress. Roxanna Panufnik's new CD collection, "Love Abide," possesses that quality in abundance. There is a feeling of expansive breadth about all of these pieces that makes them, as she surely intended, balm to the listener's soul. I say that despite the fact that this is clearly the music of a devout Catholic, and I am so far from sharing her world-view as to be a died-in-the-wool Jewish agnostic.

Years ago also, I had the temerity to suggest to Roxanna that, while I liked her music, I didn't feel that she yet commanded the unmistakable kind of personal voice that makes every work by her father, the great Andrzej Panufnik, instantly recognizable within just a few measures as his work and no one else's. Her disarming response, I remember, was, "Oh, I know, and I probably never will." But this new disc, like other pieces she has composed in the last few years, has made me feel that she was wrong about that. The composer of "Love Abide" is unmistakably Roxanna Panufnik and no one else. Particularly satisfying, and at times intensely moving, is her ability to write close harmonic intervals, especially between notes a mere semitone apart, and make them sound sensual rather than abrasive - and the performances of the vocal ensembles recorded here, under the direction variously of Barnaby Smith and Lee Ward, and of several outstanding soloists, realize that effect with often powerfully moving clarity and warmth.

For anyone remotely interested in contemporary choral music composed in an accessible idiom, or for anyone looking to build bridges between faiths, Love Abide is a must have. I cannot recommend it too highly.
