Abide With Me,
By AH (Raleigh, NC United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Abide With Me: A Novel (Paperback)
I must say that I loved the book, just as I have enjoyed all of the rest. E. Lynn Harris is my favorite authors next to Eric Jerome Dickey and I would read just about anything that he writes. I met him years ago here in Raleigh, NC at the White Rabbit Bookstore and he is one of the most personable people I have ever met; as nice as can be. He has a lot of class and style, and he made me feel as if I had known him for years. Abide With Me satisfied me and I loved the ending; Basil may just meet his match! Basil is a character that everyone loves to hate and I have enjoyed him in every book. I hope the small cliff hanger at the end means that there will be a follow up to this book. Basil truly gave all of your books flavor! It was also good to see where other characters (Trent, Nicole) were with their lives as well. Mr. Harris, keep on doing what you're doing because "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"!

Nicely told in Lynn Harris's own unique way,
This review is from: Abide with Me (Hardcover)
I finished this book without even knowing that is was the conclusion to a trilogy. For me that was good because I easily got into the characters of Raymond, Nicole, Basil and Yancey without the need to read the first two. The story is masterfully told in a way that can be only achieved by Lynn Harris. Even though I found myself at times comparing it with his other book, "And This Too Shall Pass" in terms of suspense and grip factor, I don't think he did a bad job on this book. So if you have read any of his books this will not disappoint you, and if you haven't then pick this one up and you won't be disappointed.

I loved this book, it fell right in line with the others, He is just a great writer an I look forward to his next book. I love the suspense and the fact that he left me hanging just means that there is more on the way. Love you E. Lynn!

The third time is not the charm......,

As many others have stated, I too, have read all of Harris books and could not wait to sink my teeth into something else that he has written. I began reading the trilogy years ago and felt that when I completed those works I had closure. However, in this new novel, I felt incomplete. There are so many unanswered questions and possible scenarios that such an accomplished writer as Mr. Harris had displayed in the past, I am surprised that he can sleep at night leaving his fans hanging like this. What happened to crazy cursing Basil and that backstabbing Yancy? Are they going to jump the broom or will they have drama? Why would you make Nicole so dumb and naïve? She came off in the other works as intelligent well put together sister who had a man that adored her. He made her look simple and gullible. Trent and Raymond do they or do they not make it work? What happens to Peaches and Enoch? Do they keep the store or are they bought out? And, why oh why would you bring back the lovable character Kyle as a ghost. I was what?....disappointed! I truly hope that you will write something else that has REAL closure and not this nonsense to appease your editor. You have developed storylines with real and credible characters as in the first two novels "Invisible Life" & "Just As I Am". Please return to that format...you got to be careful because we all could drop you like we never knew you. You are only as good as your last work. Keep that in mind when you feel the pressure to put out substandard stuff.

E. Lynn put's it all out on the table in this one!,

This review is from: Abide With Me: A Novel (Paperback)
I read Any way the wind blows & Not a day goes by before I read Abide with me. If you happen to come into the series of E. Lynn's books and want more of the scoop on Basil's problems with his past, Raymond's lifestyle, the true 'not-so-divafied' evil side of Yancey and they're mutual friends...then you should start with this one! It'll help you put 'two & two together' on the lives and backgrounds of all of the characters.

SIMPLY THE BEST! ..BETTER THAN ANYONE!,
This review is from: Abide with Me (Hardcover)
This author's style is impeccable. I read the first three novels with the same results-----I laughed, cried and sympathized with the characters. Next to Edgar Allen Poe, Mr. Harris is my favorite author. My ONLY complaint---I have to wait too long for the next book (2 years) YOU WILL NOT PUT HIS BOOKS DOWN! TRUST ME!

Forget Whatcha Heard!,
This review is from: Abide with Me (Hardcover)
E. Lynn forgive me for not writing sooner. I read this book when it first came out and I loved this book. It gave me closure but at the same time I had to wonder about the two shady characters that finally hooked up. They could still lead you to another book altogether. It felt good seeing the angel at the end, too. If this world was the same, life would be so boring. You got to take the good comments with the bad. So do not get discourage from the negative comments. It's all good and makes you an even stronger writer. So hurry up with the next book. This book still had me speeding to the end! I loved it!

WILL THE REAL E. LYNN HARRIS STAND UP?,
By A Customer
This review is from: Abide with Me (Hardcover)
Did someone kidnap Mr. Harris and lock him up in a closet, steal his idenity, and wrote this half written book. Or was Mr. Harris uder extreme pressure to finish this book in a hurry to meet a deadline? Either way I was shocked and disappointed with this effort. Like millions of people, I've read all of Mr. Harris's work. Some I've read twice. The charcters in his previous work I cared for, even cried for. But with Abide, I just could not connect with the characters, even though these were the same characters I connected with in previous books. The storyline with Yancy and Nicole was so predictable and very childish. I found myself doing something I never thought I would have to do with E. Lynn's work, skipping pages to get to the good part. But unfortunaley there were none. I still believe Mr. Harris is a wonderful writer. He is the master of describing things to make the reader feel like he or she is there. But this book just was not good. Please Mr. Harris, take your time with your next book, because you have millions of fans who love your work, like me. We just want the "old" E. Lynn Harris back. The one who had us rushing to the book store or library to get the new editions.

Not Satisfied,
By Ericka (Chicago, IL USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Abide with Me (Hardcover)
After reading Just As I Am and Invisible Life, Abide With Me was a let down. I finished the book very disappointed, wanting more from the characters. The first two books were filled with drama, suspense and complications. In this book, however, each chapter was almost predictable. I saw no significant changes or growth in Raymond or Nicole, and the drama in their lives was kept to a minimum. On the other hand, getting to know Basil a little more was a treat. Also discovering that Yancy may probably find out in the near future that what goes around really comes around, was very enlightening. I can't help but think that perhaps E. Lynn may have rushed this novel more than his others.
