Review of Abigail and Her Pet Zombie as seen on NBC's "The Morning Blend"

"Abigail and Her Pet Zombie is an illustrated children’s book for ages 3 and up by Author Marie F. Crow. Abigail is not your regular five year old. She has a zombie for a pet. This book is fun and quirky and has great illustrations, (the zombie keeps losing his hand). It is perfect for older siblings to read to their younger brothers and sisters."

Professor of English at Alverno College, author, and writer for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Carol Barrowman

From the Author

What people are saying about Abigail and Her Pet Zombie:

"I had to buy it after I read it to my 3rd grade class! I love this book!"

"A great story to read to my grandson. The illustrations are wonderful!"

"Abigail and Her Pet Zombie is a unique story with a wonderful message, and quite hip in today's current market."

"Great job in taking the scary out of the unusual and different. Nice message for kiddos to not judge based on fears of the unknown, but give different a chance."

More About the Author

Marie F Crow introduces her newest series, The Sirens. This magical, mythical adventure is set for a young adult audience. This is an engaging and exciting series set in a mermaid undersea realm.

Marie F Crow is also the author of the post-apocalyptic series, The Risen. She weaves her stories around the human element of the horror verses the "monsters" themselves. She believes that the real horror of life does not come from the expected, but from the unexpected responses of the human nature and what depths of trauma a person has to survive in certain situations. She began writing The Risen series when feeling that the popular genre was slipping too deep into the realm of pure "slasher" and forgetting what the horror of zombies can mean for a story.

Now with her children's series launched, Marie hopes to use her favorite "monster" as a teaching tool to inspire children to understand that not everything that looks scary, is scary. With Abigail and Her Pet Zombie series, Marie hopes to further spread her love for all things "that go bump in the night" with small children showing them that it's okay to be different and to embrace those same differences in those around them.

Little Abigail’s pet zombie loved her so much that he followed her to school one day. While the children adored him, her teacher wasn’t having any of it (a zombie in the classroom? the horra!) – that is, until she saw how friendly and kind the zombie was with Abigail and her classmates. The zombie was allowed to stay the day and even received a gold star for his impeccable behavior.

ABIGAIL AND HER PET ZOMBIE is a sweet and charmingly rendered story about diversity and compassion. Sure, Z. might be a rotting mass of once-human flesh – but he’s a nice guy despite the gray pallor and tattered clothing! The artwork is adorable and actually doesn’t look half-bad on a Kindle (though an iPad or PC might work better). Children’s books aren’t normally my thing, but I couldn’t help but download a copy when it was free on Amazon. Super-cute, and I couldn’t help but imagine Abigail and her “pet” (I prefer the term companion zombie, but wev) as a young Julie Grigio and R. from WARM BODIES.

Given the moral of the story, I do wish that the zombie had been referred as a “he” or “she” as opposed to an “it”: the zombie is a someone, not something.

…at least until the zombie apocalypse finally arrives, in which case ABIGAIL AND HER PET ZOMBIE may be cast aside as criminally irresponsible reading material. (Teaching children to run toward zombies instead of away from them? UNTHINKABLE.) So enjoy it while you can, folks!

This is a great little book about a girl and her pet. With zombies being at the fore front of the modern entertainment world, it takes the scary out of it for the kids so that parents can give it all a positive twist. A little dark, or perhaps gray, this book is a winner!
