More About the Author

Prior to his appointment as senior pastor of First United Methodist Church of Arlington, Rev. David Neil Mosser served several parishes including both Georgetown and Graham, TX. He preaches most sanctuary worship services and supervises the professional staff.

Mosser represents FUMC of Arlington in the community by serving on AMH's Medical Ethics Committee, as well as the city's Neighborhood Revitalization Strategy Area Steering Committee.

Beside these primary responsibilities, Mosser also leads Bible studies and lectures in local churches on various ecclesial topics. In addition, he directs preaching workshops for several Christian denominations.

Mosser has received degrees from Southern Methodist University, Perkins School of Theology, and the University of Texas at Austin where he earned a Ph.D. in the academic discipline of rhetoric.

Mosser is an adjunct preaching professor at the Perkins School of Theology and teaches a multicultural "Introduction to Philosophy" at Navarro College (Midlothian, TX campus). Mosser also taught at the Gbranga School of Theology in Liberia, West Africa--an area which the Arlington congregation has a deep mission awareness.

David and his wife, Helen, live on ten acres in Midlothian, TX where Helen raises horses. They have three children and two grandchildren.

This review is from: The Abingdon Preaching Annual [With CDROM] (Hardcover)
This book has some okay things to say on particular passages, but it unfortunately focuses on only one of the RCL texts for the day, which means, it is fine if you want to preach on the epistle and it's chosen the epistle to go with, but if they've chosen the gospel, your stuck. In this sense it's a beginners book, if you wish to preach on/from what is in this annual, that's fine, but if you're using it as a resource to trigger ideas, or give background and depth to your preaching it's (probably) not worthwhile.

It lacks depth when compared with "Texts for preaching" (by Brueggemann , Cousar, Gaenta and Newsome). It's worth checking out this book instead Texts for Preaching: A Lectionary Commentary, Based on the NRSV, Vol. 1: Year A

The cover boldly proclaims "Includes interactive CD-ROM with more prayers, more illustrations, more preaching and worship resources." BUT, it is not interactive, it is simply two PDF files. What's more one is simply an electronic copy of the book, the appendixes have sermon illustrations and the like, but they don't expand on the text for the day any further, in this respect I don't find either the CD-ROM or book useful.

If you are in your first semester of preaching, this book would be useful. If you want it as a resource to supplement your preparation, save your money.
