Editorial Reviews

Review

"This is an outstanding text, beautifully rendered, visually appealing, and intellectually first-rate. It is undoubtedly the best undergraduate textbook I have encountered on the subject, covering all major disorders in a way that is informative to both novice and expert alike. Richly referenced and sprinkled through with interesting and instructive case anecdotes, this textbook is scientifically state-of-art. There simply is no better text for introducing students to the subject of child psychopathology."

"I think your text helped me reach my objectives and face the challenge of teaching this course. I am glad to have used it, and will recommend it to my graduate students who teach Abnormal Child. I will use it again."

"The text is very readable and engaging. The inclusion of case examples helps to illustrate the diagnostic issues, humanize the material, and diminish the density of the more 'academic' information. The figures, tables etc. provide interesting bits of information that help maintain the rea

"The students find the book accessible and the case vignettes, etc. make learning the material more fun."

"Of all the undergraduate texts on abnormal child psychology, it is simply the best."

"I found the text very readable, and I believe my students agreed that the writing was accessible, clear, and interesting."

"The integrative developmental psychopathology perspective is excellent and unique. The writing is clear and accessible. The organization of the book overall and of each chapter makes sense - I never had the annoying experience of wondering why something was included in any of the chapters. And

Product Description

Through their thoughtful and accurate balance of developmental, clinical-diagnostic, and experimental approaches to child and adolescent psychopathology, Eric Mash and David Wolfe's ABNORMAL CHILD PSYCHOLOGY remains the most authoritative, scholarly book in today's abnormal child psychology market. Appropriate for novice and expert alike, this book traces the developmental course of each disorder and shows how biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors interact with a child's environment. Since one of the best ways to introduce students to a particular problem of childhood or adolescence is to first describe a real child, the authors begin each chapter with engaging first-person accounts and case histories of a child with a particular disorder. This child is then referred to throughout the entire chapter, illustrating the categorical and dimensional approaches used to describe disorders, as well as bringing life to the theories Mash and Wolfe present. Embracing today's world with leading-edge coverage of the DSM-IV-TR and dimensional approaches to classification, Mash and Wolfe's comprehensive introduction covers many topics: evidence-based assessment and treatment, contemporary research and cutting-edge theories related to the predominantly inattentive ADHD subtype, early-onset and the developmental propensity model of conduct disorder, the triple vulnerability model of anxiety, the tripartite model in children, depression, and autism.

5.0 out of 5 stars First-rate resource for student and practitioner alike., August 3, 2002
A first-rate resource that looks at child and adolescent psychopathology that looks at pathology from a developmental, clinical, diagnostic, and experimental perspective. Sections discuss abnormal child psychology, behavioral disorders, emotional disorders, developmental and learning disorders, and problems related to physical and mental health.

This book is logically formatted, easy to understand, yet deep enough to take student and practitioner alike to the next level in their understanding of child and adolescent psychopathology.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Interesting Read, April 23, 2010

I am currently using this book for a course on psychological disorders of childhood. If you want to save $100+ by purchasing the third edition vs. the fourth edition... go for it! Hardly any changes have been made between the two editions. It's an interesting read - boring at times, but overall, it keeps my attention. They're short chapters (30-40 pages each), but they're full of information.

4.0 out of 5 stars International version, January 21, 2010
By Canan (Utah, U.S.A.) - See all my reviews
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I got the international version, because I wanted a soft cover (it's lighter and easier to carry through the marathon around champus). I'm rather happy with it, it appears to be pretty much identical to the U.S. version (which is much more expensive as well). Just the colors are a bit dull (not sure if the U.S. version is like that, too).
