5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!!
I purchased this book for my Abnormal Psychology class (undergraduate). It is excellent! I love the layout and the actual case studies included in each chapter. For class or not, I am glad to have this book. Highly recommend.

1.0 out of 5 stars Inaccurate
Inaccurate on ME (CFS). For example, it says there is no evidence to support immune dysfunction or virus as causes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book!, October 7, 2009

I ordered this book for my Psychopathologies class, and I absolutely love it! Each type of disorder is broken down into chapters, for example, one chapter covers all the Somatoform and Dissociative Disorders. Then, each chapter is broken down into the individual disorders. There are case studies, diagnostic criteria per the DSM-IV-TR, colored pictures, and current research regarding each of the disorders. The book also covers, briefly, the treatment process for these disorders. The treatment section focuses more on therapy rather than medications, but it does state what type of medications are generally prescribed. There are visual aids as well to help those who can't learn by straight reading. I think this is a valuable book and worth the money I spent on it. I will definitely be keeping this book!

Very comprehensive. Used it for my undergraduate abnormal psych class. Very dense and a bit based towards barlows studies and towards cognitive behavioral therapy above all else

This is one book from my Graduate Program that I will be keeping. Laid out well, understandable, the interaction of the disk and the website were helpful as well. Also liked how it made issues understandable and applicable in our field.

5.0 out of 5 stars Abnormal Psychology, March 1, 2009
This review is from: Abnormal Psychology: An Integrative Approach (with Abnormal Psych Live CD-ROM) (Hardcover)
This book is fabulous. I am using it for my Anormal Psychology course right now. The book is so explicit and it describes the symptoms to look for in a person in order to diagnose and to help that individual. It is a great book. I would use it as an reference.

This review is from: Abnormal Psychology: An Integrative Approach (with Abnormal Psych Live CD-ROM) (Hardcover)
A fascinating subject, covered in a clear and detailed manner. One of the better psychology textbooks I've used. I just sold mine and I'm sad to be parting with it.

3.0 out of 5 stars glaring omissions, November 26, 2010
This review is from: Abnormal Psychology: An Integrative Approach (with Abnormal Psych Live CD-ROM) (Hardcover)
I brought this book for a course I'm taking to upgrade my psychology qualifications. As a clinician with 20 years experience I find this to be a well-written, comprehensive, readable summary of the field. All material in the book has a research basis. Given this, there were a few glaring omissions such as the failure to mention EMDR as a treatment for PTSD. This can't be poor scholarship as the method is so widely known, well-researched and accepted. The only explanation is that the author(s) have been selective in their coverage, Bad science. Barlow also describes graduated desensitization as a treatment for PTSD, but in a recent interview he explicitly states that this type of desensitization does not work for anything other than simple phobias (see: www.mentalhelp.net/poc/view_doc.php?type=doc&id). He's got my vote on that. Did he shy away from this controversial position for this text? Odd because the text seems so current in so many other respects. Psychology is an evolving science. These not minor things undermined my confidence in this text.
