Spaceship Earth - book to read on Earth Day,
By
This review is from: You're Aboard Spaceship Earth (Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science) (Paperback)
Consisting of thirty-two pages we begin You're Aboard Spaceship Earth by viewing a shuttle blasting off into space. For anyone living in Florida this is an awesome sight to take in as well as listening as the shuttle orbits. There are times when landings must take place in California when Florida is having severe weather problems and this is worth observing as well.
You're Aboard Spaceship Earth shares how everyone must do their part to keep the Earth clean and green and show how we never run out of these vital supplies for our ride along space while living here on Earth. We learn the importance of air, water, plants and animals along with the oxygen we breathe. This also presents other aspects of recycling that children might not of been aware just yet. This would be of interest to any child that has shown an interest in space and what is needed to function while on a shuttle. The examples show how You're Aboard Spaceship Earth is very similar to being in a shuttle with all the same vitals needed to stay healthy and alive. The illustrations offer both male and female examples with the age suited from five to eight for kids in the primary grades benefiting from this Stage 2 book that includes hands on activities and thoughts to ponder and explore soil and gardens in their own yards. My son was interested in reading You're Aboard Spaceship Earth a few times before moving onto another book. Any child that enjoys science and how the world works will find this book useful.

You're Aboard Spaceship Earth (Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science)
This is an especially good book in this series. It informs our young readers that we live in a closed environment just like the astronauts when they are in space. Our ship is bigger and more diverse, but the principal is the same. We drink the same water that the dinosaurs drank. Everything is recycled and reused. This book stopped short of explaining how pollution will ruin this natural recycling. But it developed the explanation of our environment so clearly right up to that point, that my son immediately figured out that we could ruin the natural system that has kept our planet for so long. So he and I continued the conversation from where this book left off. This was a refreshing approach as well as enlightening. The artwork is vivid and charming. It is written clear and interesting.

By comparing the earth to the spac shuttle, this book makes an important point right off the bat -- we are going through space on a closed system, and we have everything we need for survival right here on our planet. We can't stop for more food or air.
"You're Aboard Spaceship Earth" synthesizes the water cycle, human respiration , how green plants clean the air and produce oxygen, how all living matter relies on minerals, and how those minerals are returned to the soil, how composting works, and why we need to keep earth clean. Much better book than I was expecting. Strangely, apart from composting, there were no do-it-yourself science experiments. I have come to expect those from this series. |
