More About the Author

R.A. Montgomery is an avid adventurer, first and foremost. Whether in the mountains, or on the sea, or in explorations of the mind, he has found adventure in every aspect of his life. Teaching school, working in the administration of a top university, hiking in the Himalayas, or working in the Peace Corps in Africa, Montgomery has taken making choices seriously. Montgomery says, "There is never a day in which you are not confronted with choice. Some seemingly small choices can determine the path of the rest of your life. CYOA gave me a vehicle for examining all the impacts of choice."

He was born in Greenwich, Connecticut in 1936. One of his first memories is sitting in his high chair and being frightened of Jell-O, which he thought was alive. He attended Hopkins Grammar School, the oldest private school in the country (founded in 1660), and Williston Academy. He got his college degree from Williams in 1958, and did graduate school at Yale and NYU.

Choose Your Own Adventure® books reflect his diverse interests and values. Montgomery states, "More than anything else, everyone should have the freedom to express themselves. Second to that, everyone should take risks and be willing to fail. Picking yourself up off the mat is the central business of life."

Today R.A. Montgomery lives in north central Vermont, where he is CEO of the small publishing house that has re-introduced the CYOA series. He travels frequently to Asia and Europe. Although his technical climbing days are kaput.

I, like many other reviewers here, remember fondly reading these type of books as a child, flipping back and forth, reading all the twists to each excitingly different ending. My memory isn't sharp enough to say if these are the actual books or not. They seem much shorter now, but of course I'm now viewing them from an entirely different perspective.

I bought this set for my daughter when she was 9, thinking that she would love the books as much as I did. I was mistaken. She blew through them and moved on. It's not that she doesn't enjoy reading, beause she does. But I think today's kids have so many more exciting things available to them than we did, so it just doesn't have the same effect. For us, these books were our video games of the time!

So my advice to you would be to find just one of these books used, or borrow it at a library, and gauge your child's interest before buying these fairly expensive sets.

My son is a very reluctant reader. He has mild autism that comes with a reading disability. He was held back in the third grade by my request, and even with that was always 1-2 years behind his grade level. This year he is in 5th grade. Since I purchased these for him, he has been voluntarily reading. He carries these books with him to school and is excited to "find out what will happen next". At the beginning of this year, his reading level was grade 3.5. Yesterday he did his AR test at school and he is a 5.1!! This is since he began reading these books. I finally found something that hooks him into a story.

He doesn't understand all of the words, but since his is into the story, he can get the word in context. This is a new skill for him. A "must buy" for those reluctant readers!

We bought these books for our son because we remembered how much we loved them at his age. They are much quicker reads than I remember, but he loves them, so they get 5 stars. One book takes him less than 45 minutes to get through. He hasn't gotten to the stage where he goes back and makes different choices yet, but I'm sure he'll become even more fond of them then.

Choose your own Adventure books are unbelievably exciting! Who doesn't love a book where you can choose what you want to do? And you can die twenty different ways! You can also triumph too! This is a great book series for kids of all ages- even adults who are kids at heart!

Got this as a gift set for a child - friend who doesn't like to read so much.

I remember these from when I was a child. My brother liked them because you can "choose a path to follow" every few pages. It makes kids feel like they're taking part in an ACTIVE adventure... almost like a game. As a result, kids are more willing to sit down with the book and attempt reading.

As a teacher, I've recommended this to so many parents as a means to get children interested in reading. Since reading motivation has a lot to do with confidence, books like this are a bonus because they're active, exciting and use very basic language. Any 4-6 grader should be able to pick these up and enjoy them.

I loved these Choose Your Own Adventure books when I was a child, so last Christmas I bought the first set for my 8-year old nephew. While it took him a while to adjust to the concept of not reading the pages in order, he soon began enjoying them as much as I do, and now he saves the books for when we are together, so we can "read them together" (he does all the reading, but he likes to take turns "choosing the adventure" (unless he's on a roll!) This year, he's getting the second volume for Christmas!

He loves all the different story options and endings. Granted, he is of above-average intelligence, so I can't vouch for what ages these books are best suited for (he does enjoy them more now at 9 than he did at 8), but I definitely enjoy (and recommend) them as much as an adult as I did as a child!

I remembered the "Choose Your Own Adventures" fondly from my childhood, so for Christmas I bought the first set of books for my 5 1/2 yr old. While some of the text and concepts are still a little over his head occasionally, he really loves them. We work with him on reading and use the choices to encourage him to really think about what we have read as opposed to simply passive listening. The great part is... I don't remember the stories and I love getting to experience them again. Going to be buying the next set when I finish this review as we have read all of the first set of books pretty much through and through...

I wish more of these types of books were written.

Thanks!
