More About the Author

R.A. Montgomery is an avid adventurer, first and foremost. Whether in the mountains, or on the sea, or in explorations of the mind, he has found adventure in every aspect of his life. Teaching school, working in the administration of a top university, hiking in the Himalayas, or working in the Peace Corps in Africa, Montgomery has taken making choices seriously. Montgomery says, "There is never a day in which you are not confronted with choice. Some seemingly small choices can determine the path of the rest of your life. CYOA gave me a vehicle for examining all the impacts of choice."

He was born in Greenwich, Connecticut in 1936. One of his first memories is sitting in his high chair and being frightened of Jell-O, which he thought was alive. He attended Hopkins Grammar School, the oldest private school in the country (founded in 1660), and Williston Academy. He got his college degree from Williams in 1958, and did graduate school at Yale and NYU.

Choose Your Own Adventure® books reflect his diverse interests and values. Montgomery states, "More than anything else, everyone should have the freedom to express themselves. Second to that, everyone should take risks and be willing to fail. Picking yourself up off the mat is the central business of life."

Today R.A. Montgomery lives in north central Vermont, where he is CEO of the small publishing house that has re-introduced the CYOA series. He travels frequently to Asia and Europe. Although his technical climbing days are kaput.

5.0 out of 5 stars Start here! September 29, 2007
Format:Paperback
If you are new to choose your own adventure, I recommend starting with
these 4. They are the first in the new series, and are all individual
books. I am pretty sure they are all reprints, and the art is definitely
new, but they are a great place to start as they cover a wide range of
topics. The bottom line is kids will eat these books up, not just because
they are about great topics, with fun art and very well written but
because they get to choose. They get to pick where they go, what they do,
and all they while they are reading. A warning though, buy this box set
and you might have to by the next.

3.0 out of 5 stars My sons like these books September 8, 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
They have had them for a couple of weeks and they are still reading them. I read to them a couple of times and the books are enjoyable. The only problem I have with them is that some of the options you chose end the story too quickly. In some cases, you only read about 3 or 4 pages and the whole thing is over in just a couple of minutes. But if they make the right choices, the story can last somewhat longer so they get more reading time. I would like to see this type of idea in a novel that would take days to complete and would develop their decisions more. But these are entertaining books for younger readers.

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic collection returned July 10, 2007
Format:Paperback
Choose Your Own Adventure collections have always been a part of the series, and carrying on that tradition is this collection of the first four books in the newly republished series.

If this is your first trip into CYOA, or are a long time fan coming back, this is collection has a lot to offer. The first four are a nice mix of adventure, mystery, and sci-fi and you get a good feel for the writing of author R.A. Montgomery. The stories have been updated for the times, which is to say the "You" character now has cell phones, GPS and the like. The art has also been redone, but continues to be of excellent quality and pertinent to the choices. Those choices, however, are still the same. They are yours.

There are also collection of 5-8 and 8-12. Six book collections are available as well, but if you are looking to get a started in choosing your own adventure, this collection is a great way to start.

Finally, on a personal note, its great to see the series back!

Got these for my son. The writing is horrible, and you end up dying for random reasons that are in no way related to the quality of the choice you made. It's just random. Read more

Gave this to a friend to give to their children to read. They still hold up even almost 3 decades later. Though I wish they kept the original cover art.
